I am attending a 2 day parent workshop on visual systems for children with autism. A majority of the things I learned today I have tried in the past with Kira with great success. After listening to the comments and questions that the parents in the class had today, I realized there was alot of confusion about visuals (visuals vs schedules vs PECS) and that many parents were totally over-complicating the concept of visuals. So, I had an idea.... I would like to host some VERY SIMPLE training sessions on BASIC visual systems and offer them here and at the other group (once I figure that other group out) we could even have a chat or two along the way...and I am actually looking in to teleconferencing for another project I am working on that we we could maybe use too. Would anyone be interested?
I am interested. We have a new behavior therapist for Lane. She will use the 1-5 approach for identifying anger but I know she will want to use some sort of visual schedule. I have never done this for either of my boys in the past. They are both auditory learners (visual problems) so I have shyed away from visual pecs or schedules. I would like some background and some ideas as to what would work for Lane before she suggests them. I do not want her to be the only "expert".
If you are available this Sunday, I can call you (I finally moved out of the stone age and got an unlimited calling plan) I would be happy to talk with you to answer any questions you may have about visuals or help strategize what you could try for Lane. Just let me know here or via email....
