At a young age, most kids love to color. Doing so, gives the child practice with control to stay in the lines....and improving handwriting.
Some kids need a defined visual to help. If you outline the picture in the color to be filled in....this will give a visual boarder and help the child to realize that they can use a variety of colors in the same picture.
If fine motor is difficult with holding the crayon.....peel all the paper off the crayon and break them into 1 1/2 pieces. Doing so helps them to start to accommodate the tri-fold hold.
WARNING: If your child hates to have "broken" things. Do not break them in front of them....and if you peel the paper it will also make them think it is a "different" kind of crayon.
If you use the same crayons with them...and color with them...you model for them....so join in the fun and rekindle your love of coloring!
