The Sedlec Ossuary is a small Christian chapel decorated with human bones. It's located in Sedlec, which is a suburb in the outskirts of the Czech town Kutna Hora. Many thousands of people died there in the 14th and 15th century due to war and black death and were buried in the cemetary of the cistercian monastery that existed there at the time. Around 1400 a Gothic church was built in the center of the cemetery. In 1870 the Schwarzenberg family (of which you can see the coat of arms below) asked a woodcarver to put the bone heaps in order This is the result. |
