</MYMAILSTATIONERY> The Elements Earth -- Air -- Fire -- Water -- Spirit / Gender "Attuning and working with these energies in magic not only lends you the power to affect dramatic changes in your life, it also allows you to sense your own place in the larger scheme of Nature." - Scott Cunningham, Earth Power |
Earth | Description | Earth is the ground we step on, it it the home and mother, it is the source and provider for all physical needs. The element earth in the inner world represents sensations. Feeling good or bad, feeling senuous or isolated, being at ease or uncomfortable. It represents where you come from - the animal instincts, which guide you surely to food and shelter, to warmth and security. An "earthy" person is one who has his feet firmly on the ground, who does not dream much and moves well in the clearly defined realms of physical living - the kitchen, the fields, the work - providing steadily for tomorrow. Without this basic function a person is like a leaf in the wind - unable to attach himself to any identifiable reality and to draw nourishment and security from it. Where the earthy functions are impaired or confused there prevails a sense of insecurity, of loss and of aloneness | Basic Nature | Earth is our mother. It's as fertile and nurturing as farmland; as moist as soil and as dry as sand. In its physical manifestations (such as stones), Earth represents the densest of the elements. Press your hand against fresh dirt. Feel it's stability its earthiness. Know that within its fertile surface we've raised our food; on it we live our lives; within it we bury our deceased. We couldn't exist in this form without the earth. But our planet is simply a manifestation of this element. True Earth energy also exists within ourselves and within the universe at large. Fertile, moist, nurturing; stabilizing; grounding. Gravity is a manifestation of this element. | Attributes | Earth is the element of stability and of the body. It is wisdom, strength, growth and prosperity. It is the physical earth and the very heart of life. It is essential in spells and rituals of prosperity, business, fertility and stability. Earth is a feminine element and governs stone and knot Magic. Air is light and expanding, therefore difficult to be measured and contained. It represents the world of thoughts, and it is often said of someone who is very thoughtful that he has "his head in the clouds". The ability to reason and synthesize is what raises man above pains and pleasures as it shows him what part these experiences have in the whole process and makes them acceptable. Through air you can have an idea of the direction you want your life to take, and when fire combines with it, there is nothing that can stop you. But a poor air functioning will see you stranded in your own particular world without the breath of vision to carry yourself ahead. | Basic Nature | Scientists and magicians may have different views concerning this element, but all agree that it's vital to human survival. Without air, we would perish. Air is the power of movement; of freshening and of intelligence. It's the invisible and yet quite real mixture of gases that we breathe in every day. In magical terms, Air is also the power of the mind: the force of Intellect. Go to a place with clean air and breathe deeply. Touch a feather. Inhale the fragrance of a heavily scented flower. Study an intricately patterned leaf. Experience the wonders of the manifestations of this element. Remember, too, that we possess Air energy within ourselves. Flying, moving, fresh, intelligent, suspending. Sound is a manifestation of this element | Attributes | Air is the element of the mind. It is intellect, inspiration, imagination. It is ideas, knowledge, dreams and wishes. Air is the element of new life and new possibilities and is essential to spells and rituals of travel, instruction, finding lost items, some types of divination, and freedom. Air aids us in visualization, a vital technique in Magic. It is both heat and light". The harnessing of fire is the one act in the history of man which marks his change from animal to human; it represents both the light of intelligence and the courage to follow it. It is the spark of passion and initiative. Fire shares with water some kind of intrinsic quality of life: fire makes things warm, water lush and full, and together they make them alive. Just as in the case of low water functioning, low fire functioning does not impair a person's basic ability to survive, but it drastically impairs the capability to enjoy life. Excessive fire is dangerous as fire destroys everything in its wake, but poor fire is just as unhappy: a poor fire person is cold, slow to act or passive, without enthusiasm for his life and himself. Fire Magic will help to regain the spark of initiative, bring courage and passion, help to destroy the old and go ahead with the new. | Basic Nature | Fire is the creator and the destroyer. It warms our homes, cooks our food, and fuels our passions. Unlike the other elements, Fire cannot exist in physical form without consuming something else. Thus, fire transforms objects into new forms: heat, light, ash, and smoke. On a sunny day, go outside at noon and press your receptive hand against a warm rock. Smell the smoke from a burning fire. Gaze into a candle's flame. Immerse yourself in Fire energy, and realize that it also exists within ourselves. Fire must be controlled to be of benefit to us. When we light a candle, we call upon its powers but also limit them. This is necessary if its physical forms are to be of use. A raging forest fire actually helps the Earth, clearing away underbrush and encouraging dormant seeds to burst into new life. Purifying, destructive, cleansing, energetic, sexual, forceful. Heat is a manifestation of this element. | Attributes | Fire is the element of change and strong passions. It is creativity, motivation, will power, drive and sensuality. It is sexuality, both physical and spiritual. Fire is essential to spells and rituals of healing, purification, sex, breaking bad habits or destroying illness and disease. Fire is the element of authority and leadership. Fire governs all candle Magic. Tears, water flowing from the eyes, are the outward expression of a strong emotional content. Indeed, feelings are made of the same stuff as water: they can be felt cool and refreshing on the skin - but try to grab them, try to get hold of them, they elude you and pool only where they find a gentle place to rest. Water umbibes all life forms and gives them lushness and freshness. Without any feelings the soul would not be a soul at all, but an arid desert of calculations and speculations based upon reactions on the physical surroundings. Poor water functioning causes a person to be arid, distant, cold and unresponsive. On the other hand excessive water is like a river which exceeds its banks and can wipe away all sense of reality and measure. In cases of poor water functioning water Magic is very helpful. But be careful not to use water Magic in the case of excessive water functioning. As for all the other elements you must remember not to deal directly with excesses but to find out which element is lacking. Nourishing that one the balance will be automatically redressed without danger. | Basic Nature | Water is the cleansing, healing, psychic, loving element. It washes over us when we see our mates; supports us when we swim; gives us life when we are dehydrated. Dew dusts plants after the sun sets. Rainstorms (one manifestation of this element) drench us. Taste pure water. Move your hand through a stream, lake, pool, or bowl full of water. Feel its cool liquidity; it's soft touch. Listen to water trickling into a pool. As you do these things, remember that we contain Water energy within ourselves as well. The energy of this element is vital to our well being as humans, for it contains within it the essence of love. ~Love is the underlying reason for all magic.~ Water is love. Flowing, purifying, healing, soothing, loving | Attributes | Water is the element of emotion and subconscious. It is love, purification, intuition, mysteries of the self, compassion and family. It is psychic ability. Water is essential in spells and rituals of friendship, marriage, happiness, fertility, healing, pleasure, and psychic abilities. Water governs spells involving mirrors.
