The blackbird has a long magickal history. It was the first of the five animals that were consulted as the knights searched for the child Mabon. The blackbird ushers in the autumn season of magick and change as it perches at the gateway between two worlds. A gatherer, the blackbird is always on the hunt for left over grain standing in the fields or a conviently filled neighbourhood birdfeeder. The blackbird is clever and capable and relentless in the pursuit of its goals.
Use this spell to help you achieve whatever goals you've set for yourself. If that's losing weight, getting a better job, or completing a personal project, this spell will work. This is the time of year to harvest the goals you've worked hard for. So let's bump up your skills and sharpen your instincts!
For this spell the supply list is simple: all you need are five fallen feathers (black, if you can get them), yourself, and a nice breezy day outside. Take yourself and the feathers and head to a quiet and safe spot in nature. Try the backyard or perhaps a neighborhood park. Hold the feathers in your hands and concentrate on the skill and capability of the clever blackbird.
Ask that during this season of the earth's bounty you will recieve your fair share. Then focus on your personal goals and see yourself fulfillling them. Now wait for the breeze and raise your hands up and repeat this charm:
In the sign of Virgo I call for skill and cunning,
The element of air sends these five feathers floating.
[Allow the feathers to float off on the breeze.]
As swift as the blackbird that circles the fields of fall,
Desires become reality; Goddess, hear my call.
Close the spell with:
By the powers of the earth and air this charm is sung,
As I will, so mote it be, an' let it harm none.
Let the feathers stay where they fall. Now turn and walk confidently home. Consider hanging up a simple birdfeeder and enjoy watching the birds. If you live in the city and don't have a lot of space, you could easily fill a clay saucer with bird seed and set it on your patio or balconey. Keep your eyes peeled for activities of the birds at this time of year; see what you notice and how they behave as the autumn season begins.
