Disciplined By Joy
The young man rode his pony from the big meadow up to camp,
jumping off at his Grandfather's lodge. He scratched on the hide
door, leaving his anger at himself outside, in the burden basket, next
to the lodge's flap. Grandfather called him inside, and the two began
to talk.
The young brave was upset. While riding his pony in the
meadow, he could not hit the center of the brush buffalo the boys
had made for a target. The agony on his face made him look older
than his eleven winters. Grandfather was sensitive to his concerns,
understanding how awkward young hands, jostling on a pony, often
slipped when handling arrows and a bow. Grandfather spoke with
concern.
"Spotted Horn, when you learn any new skill, it requires patience
and discipline. The brave who can see what he may one day
become, approaches the learning process with joy, knowing that
every victory over his growing body's awkwardness brings him
closer to being a full-grown warrior. That vision of himself, and his
inner knowing, is the hidden joy. No other person knows what he
knows about himself. He carries a secret that makes being a dedicated
disciple to his future potential an act of happy determination."
