By now you will probably have scheduled your first doctor's visit. At this visit you will have a pap smear and a rectal exam (not all doctors do this). About 3 vials of blood will be taken to check for sexually transmitted diseases including an HIV test, rubella antibody titers ( immunity against the 3 day measles), Rh factor, complete blood count, blood sugar(diabetes) & blood type. Urine tests are usually done at each visit to check for blood & sugar in the urine. You will be weighed so that the baby's growth can be charted more accurately. A pap smear is done to check for any cancerous or pre-cancerous cells of the cervix, check for placement of the baby in the womb, and to see if the pelvis is large enough for the baby to pass through during birth. A rectal exam is done to check for hemorrhoids, check placement of the baby and how large the pelvis is. A CVS test can be done between 9 &12 weeks. note:if you are Rh-negative and have had an amniocentesis, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, or abortion you should receive Rho GAM to prevent you from forming antibodies to Rh-positive blood.
