                      WITCHES AND HERBS

The use of herbs was a great incentive for most church witch burnings so today several herbalists are painstakingly re-discovering these lost herbs and their uses in spells, health, and love.  And the male dominated medical profession would feel undermined if the orfinary person knew how to cure ailments.  So they passed laws that when someone tells others about an herbal cure will be, or have a chance of being changed for practicing medicine without a liscense and so they place more and more restrictions on herbs.
The green Element craft is basically an herbal one and herbs are used for both medical and magickal practices and purposes.
-Educate yourself about herbs, their uses and ways plus a good identification book (with photos) is very useful. - If there is any question of wheather it' the right one don't use it! always be sure...-

The very contact with Mother Earth and green growing things is a source of renewal of energy and power for wny Green Wiccan.
A witches garden should contain crertain basic herbs, wheather in a garden space or in a container.  Here's a list of all-around herbs for medicine and culinary uses as well as magickal.

                     HERBS AND THEIR QUALITIES

Common cooking spices do double duty as herbs that can be utilized  in the craft.  using these herbs in food preperations add magick to a meal, and can be made a sort of ritual.  By learning what uses you can make of herbs in magickal practice, the creating of spells begins to follow a pattern that works for each person, based upon accepted attributes. (Scott Cunninghams encyclopedia of magickal herbs is a must have,)  you can match the spell you want to create with an herb by it's characteristics, planetary and elemental associations, ect.:

                                               HERBS AND MOON CYCLES

In planting and harvesting for magickal use, the phases of the moon are important.    Plant flowering annuals and above ground crops with exterior seeds, ( ie. wheat)  when the moon is waxing between the new moon and the first quarter. -  Between the first quarter and the waxing full moon, plant above ground crops with interior seeds (ie peas).  -  Root crops bulbs, biennials, and perennials, (not herbs) should be planted between the waxing full moon and the last quarter.  -  Do not plant between the last quarter and the new moon.
Planting with the moon and the astrological sign is also a good idea, the moon stays in an astrological sign for about two and a half days so having an almanac (farmers or witches) is very good source of this information.
Fruitful signs used for planting and pruning for growth, are Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, taurus, capricorn, and libra.    The barren signs for weeding, cultivating, and harvesting herbs, are Leo, Virgo, and Sagitarius with Aries, Gemini, and Aquarius for harvesting herbs.   (Roots in perticular)
The combinations vary according to what region your in, so going by the phase of the moon and how nature prompts you for planting and harvesting, is best.    The order of harvests is determined by the plants natural growth cycle and weeding and pruning are as required.  Based on the natural interaction of the Earth, Moon, and Sun for signals of seasonal change.
