Honey
A new study says reaching for a spoonful of honey instead of sugar may have unexpected health benefits. Researchers credit honey's polyphenols, the natural chemicals that increase the amount of disease-fighting antioxidants in your blood. In baking, use half the honey instead of sugar, add 1/4 teaspoon for each cup of honey used, and reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees to prevent over-browning.
To sweeten tea, salad dressings, oatmeal, and other unbaked items, simply replace one teaspoon of sugar with a bit less honey to taste. Experiment with different types of honey made from the blossoms of everything, from clover to raspberry—each has a subtle, unique flavor. Remember, while it may be a healthier choice than sugar, the calories from honey still count!
Tally them at 21 calories per teaspoon.
