THE CANDIDA CLEANSE Candida albicans is a yeast the normally resides in the body in the digestive tract and vagina, kept in check by the immune system and beneficial bacteria in the body. If beneficial bacteria are killed by antibiotics or if the immune system becomes weakened, Candida yeast can grow unchecked. Local infections, such as oral thrush, skin infections, and vaginal yeast infections in women can result. People with severely weakened immune systems, such as those with cancer or AIDS, may develop widespread Candida infection, a serious medical condition called systemic candidiasis. Some holistic practitioners also believe that overgrowth of candida yeast in the intestines is responsible for a yeast syndrome, resulting in symptoms such as fatigue, headache, mood swings, sinus congestion, depression, poor memory and concentration, and cravings for sweets. Excess Candida yeast in the intestins is thought to penetrate the intestinal wall, causing yeast and other unwanted particles to be absorbed into the body. The absorbed yeast particles are thought to activate the immune system, resulting in an allergic hypersensitivity to Candida. This yeast syndrome, popularized by William Crook, MD in his 1983 book, The Yeast Connection, is considered highly controversial. Most conventional doctors think this syndrome is overdiagnosed by holistic practitioners and many disagree with the validity of the diagnosis. Contributing Factors - Use of oral contraceptives, steroids, antacids, anti-ulcer medications, or frequent or long-term use of antibiotics
- High-sugar diets
- Pregnancy
- Smoking
- Food allergies and intolerances
- Diabetes
The Candida Yeast Screening QuizThe candida yeast screening quiz describes the symptoms of yeast overgrowth. Take the Candida Yeast Screening Quiz Candida CleanseDiet is an important component of the Candida cleanse. Dr. Crook's recommended that people with Candida overgrowth: - avoid eating sugar. According to Dr. Crook, sugar promotes the growth of yeast. The total carbohydrate intake per day is often limited. For example, during the initial two to three weeks on the diet, the carbohydrate intake may be restricted to less than 60 grams per day, depending on age, health, activity level, and the extent of food sensitivities. Low-carbohydrate foods such as meat, chicken, turkey, shellfish, non-starchy vegetables, and certain nuts are emphasized instead. As symptoms subside, the carbohydrate total of the diet is often gradually increased.
- avoid eating foods that contain any type of yeast. These include fermented foods such as bread made with yeast, cheese, tomato paste, mushrooms, and beer. Although Dr. Crook believed that people with Candida overgrowth would also be allergic to other fungi, not all practitioners believe this restriction is necessary.
The length of time on the Candida cleanse depends on the length of time one has had symptoms and the severity of the symptoms. The general level of health is another important factor. People who do respond to the diet often report that it takes a minimum of four weeks before any improvement is noticeable. For many, it can take months. Once there is sufficient improvement in symptoms, practitioners suggest slowly reintroducing foods from the restricted list back into the diet. Herbs and SupplementsAnother important component of Dr. Crook's plan was the use of herbs and supplements, or in certain cases, prescription drugs, to decrease the amount of yeast in the body. Holistic practitioners usually recommend starting with smaller amounts of herbs and supplements and increasing gradually. Otherwise, a temporary worsening of symptoms called a Herxheimer reaction, or yeast die-off, may occur. It is believed to result when Candida yeast are killed and they release protein fragments and toxins that trigger an antibody response from the immune system. Lab TestsThe Candida Immune Complex test is considered by holistic practitioners to be one of the most reliable tests. It costs approximately $100. Labs that perform this test are Immuno Sciences, Great Smokies Diagnostic Lab, and Antibody Assay Laboratories. EvidenceOne clinical trial looked at the use of the antifungal drug nystatin in 116 people who were thought to have candida yeast overgrowth. After four weeks, treatment with nystatin improved symptoms compared to placebo. Some people in the study also avoided dietary sugar and yeast and reported an even greater improvement in symptoms. Another study, involving 42 women, did not find any benefit on symptoms with nystatin use. These foods include: white sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, maple sugar, molasses, date sugar, turbinado, raw sugar, demerrara, amisake, rice syrup, sorghum.
Read labels carefully. The hidden sugars to watch for include: sucrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, glycogen, glucose, mannitol, sorbitol, galactose, monosaccharides, polysaccharides.
- Fruit -- Fruit contain natural sugars that support the growth of yeast. The following foods should be eliminated:
- Frozen, canned, and dried fruit
- All canned and frozen fruit juice
- Oranges and orange juice
- Melons, especially cantaloupe.
- These fruit often contain mold.
- Yeast -- Foods that contain yeast should be eliminated. These include: Baker's yeast, Brewer's yeast, Engevita, Torula, and any other nutritional yeast. Baked goods raised with yeast such as breads, rolls, crackers, bagels, pastries, and muffins should also be eliminated.
- Foods Containing Gluten -- These include wheat, barley, and rye and includes products made with these ingredients such as wheat bread, rye bread, and pasta.
- Vinegar -- Vinegar is made with a yeast culture. Foods that contain vinegar include: White vinegar, red wine vinegar, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, mayonnaise, commercial salad dressing, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce, BBQ sauce, shrimp sauce, soy sauce, mustard, pickles, pickled vegetables, green olives, relishes, horseradish, mincemeat, chili sauce.
- Mushrooms -- Mushrooms are fungi. Eliminate all mushrooms.
>>This candida cleanse food list is continued on page twoAfter you have read it, don't forget to find out what foods to limit. List of Foods to Avoid Entirely this candida food list is continued from the previous page Peanuts, Peanut Butter, and Pistachios -- Peanuts, peanut butter, and pistachios often have high mold contamination and should be eliminated.
Alcohol -- Alcoholic beverages provide sugar that feeds the yeast and stresses other organs such as the liver. Eliminate all forms of alcohol, including red wine, white wine, beer, whiskey, brandy, gin, scotch, any fermented liquor, vodka, rum, and all liqueurs. Coffee, Black Tea, Cider, Root beer -- Coffee and black tea create an extra burden for the body's stress-coping mechanisms. Regular coffee, instant coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and all types of black tea (including "fruit flavored" black tea) should be eliminated. List of Foods to Limit - Dairy Products -- Candida is thought to impair the body's ability to digest fat, so dairy products may have to be restricted. How much dairy one consumes may also depend on individual reactions to cow's milk and cow's milk products such as cheese, yogurt, buttermilk, and butter.
People often temporarily eliminate the following dairy foods from the diet: - Cow's milk, including whole, skim, 2%, dry powdered milk
- Most cheeses. Cheeses lower in lactose may be tolerated, such as Monterey Jack, sharp white cheddar, swiss, mozzarella, Colby, provolone, and dry curd cottage cheese.
Organic skim yogurt made with live bacteria may be beneficial for some people because of the beneficial bacteria it contains. Cider, root beer, and other fermented beverages should be eliminated. Healthy alternatives include: water, vegetable broth, fresh vegetable juice, herbal teas
Aged, Moldy and Processed Cheeses -- Roquefort and other aged, moldy or blue cheeses should be eliminated. Also eliminate processed cheese such as cheese slices, Velveeta, Cheese Whiz, cream cheese, cheese snacks, and Kraft dinner.
Processed, Dried, Smoked, and Pickled Meats -- These include products such as smoked salmon, pickled herring, sausages, bacon, hot dogs, pastrami, bologna, sandwich meats, salami, corned beef, pickled tongue, and kolbassa. These products are processed and many contain unhealthy nitrates and nitrites, so they are not recommended for use at any time.
Packaged, Processed, and Refined Foods -- Canned, bottled, packaged, boxed, and other processed foods usually contain yeast, refined sugar, refined flour, chemicals, preservatives, and coloring. They are not recommended at any time.
