The Snow Moon
Samhain has passed and we are now in the dark time of preparation for the coming light. This is the time of the Snow Moon, also called the Beaver Moon, Frosty Moon, and Mourning Moon among many other names.
As you prepare your altar this month consider what you see around you. In much of the Northern Hemisphere the skies are grey or grey-blue with the cold chill and snow. The geese may still be seen flying south in their great V formations. If you live in an area where people still have wood fireplaces or outdoor fire pits the sent of pine and cedar fires may drift on the breezes. Try bringing a little of that energy into your home with a grey altar cloth or some pinecones. Some of the stones you may want to decorate your altar with include those in icy blues and purples such as blue topaz.
The energy that surrounds this time is that of finding your roots. Like many of the perennial plants which withdraw into their roots to sustain life through the cold winter, this is a wonderful time for us to look within to see where our strength comes from and to spend give some attention to that place. This is also an excellent time to create or rekindle a relationship with deity. If you do not have a deity that you work with regularly, try using the energy of the full moon to do some divination or meditation on the God or Goddess who is right for you to be working with at this time. If you already work with a particular deity, you might take this opportunity to deepen your relationship with them.
Some of the Goddesses to consider working with during this moon include the many Hearth Goddesses of the various pantheons. These are the Goddesses who protect and watch over our homes and keep us feeling safe and secure. Light a candle to them and ask for their blessings through the winter. You might also consider conducting a home blessing or renewing one you have already done. Some ideas along these lines are to thoroughly smudge your home with cedar or sage to cleanse it of any negative energy. Then in each room, light a candle and ask a blessing on your home.
However you decide to work your magic this month, remember to take care and be kind to yourself during this time. The sun will be returning soon and we can all share in the joy of renewal. Brightest Blessings!
