Hey everyone,
I am thinking of getting the BF a remote car starter for Christmas but I have never used one before so I was curious if anyone here has.
I have researched a bunch of brands on line, read a few reviews but frankly on line reviews always leave me skeptical. I want to hear from people I know lol. I've asked at work but no one has one. But I've now got a bunch of co-workers thinking it's a great gift idea for those of us living in cold parts of the country!!!
I have found brands ranging from 60 bucks all the way up to 200, with the higher end models having extra bells & whistles like being able to open your trunk from 500 feet away.
So, has anyone used one? Did you like it, hate it?
Thanks for the feedback!

As long as they are installed by competent techs, most of the ones on the market are fine. I tend to like the ones that have as few features as possible that still meet my needs. If he doesn't already have an alarm installed, it would be a good idea to buy one integrated with an alarm. If he has an alarm already, see if there is an add-on remote start module available for it. Make sure you get all the documentation (any reputable shop will give all the packaging to you) for any future issues that may arise. I would be more concerned with who is doing the install more than the brand of the starter. You find a good installer and they will know the brands to stay away from.

Got one on my GMC and love it.
You have to set what you want either AC or heat.
Mine will not work until all doors are locked and without a key in the ignition you can't get it out of gear.
The best part of the remote is that if someone gets pissed off at you, you got a chance to miss that little surprise that was left for you...
And it is handy to heat up the vehicle before you get in and drive.

I have one on my Cadillac Catera and love it. Whether it was after market or not, I don't know.

Mine automatically locks the doors itself before it starts.  It also has, of course, a door alarm, plus the engine shuts down if the car is placed in drive without the key in the ignition.

My only issue was that I started it from remote one day, and it died.  I again tried to remote start it, and again, it died.  ARRRGH!  I finally just went out, put the key in and started it manually so it could warm up, then went back into the house.   Not a good move.  On mine, at least, if you remotely start it and it dies, it will try 2 times to restart without you retrying. I didn't know this.   I started the car manually, but it was still in restart mode which automatically locks the cardoors.  I was locked out.  ARRRRRRRRGH!

Other than that, I love it.

Just remember...like someone mentioned: if you leave the a/c on when you get out, then the a/c will come on when you remote start it.  Same with the heat.  Be sure to leave the setting wherever you want it to be.

good luck!

Not really seen any of these in the UK. But I know one question would asked from most british drivers. " Is it coveed by Insurance". For instance would the insurance company pay out if the car got pinched while it was being warmed up. I would say in the UK the chances are the insurance company wouldn't pay up.
I think the first thing is to check if you are insured with this type of contraption fitted.

Hal, I don't see any reason insurance wouldn't cover it if a theft occured.

As stated, there are many anti-theft devices built in, such as auto-locking doors before it remote-starts and the engine shutting down if the transmission is engaged without the key in the ignition.

If insurance wouldn't cover a theft in these cases, you need a new company.

Sassy,
I was just saying to check first. I know insurance companies over here would not pay out if this system hadn't been approved by them. Always good to be careful and find out if your covered. Bad enough to have your vehicle pinched but worse that the insurance company won't pay out. Always best to check first.
