You were chatting about the movie "Casino" once.  Thought you might like this....  Look at this picture.....

This is looking at the Tony Roma's rib house in Las Vegas.  This is located on East Sahara Avenue, just about four or five blocks east of Las Vegas Boulevard.

Back around about 1981, "Lefty" Rosenthal, a reputed mob figure involved in "the skim" of gambling profits for the Chicago Mob here in Las Vegas, left this restaurant and got in his car, a big Cadillac.  His car was parked right about where the photographer is standing.  Behind is another restaurant, Marie Callendar's, with this parking lot between them.  Both of these restaurants are still there.

Well, anyways, "Lefty", who just recently died of natural causes in Miami this year, started his car and it blew up.  What saved him was a steel plate welded underneath the seat that deflected the blast but catapulted him out of the burning wreck of a Cadillac.  The Chicago Mob was totally mad at him (and at Tony Spillotro) for not maintaining a low profile.  The straw that broke the camel's back was when "Lefty's" wife, Geri, recently caused a scene outside the Las Vegas Country Club by wrecking a car, throwing stuff out in the street, then her screeching off to get all the money and jewels and cashing them in for herself.  Serious domestic disturbance that caused the police to respond.

"Lefty" sustained injuries from the Chicago Mob instigated car bombing, but they were not life threatening.  This incident definitely caused him to seek another line of work and to leave town.  Pronto.

Both Tony Roma's and Marie Callendar restaurants are still there.  With the parking lot where the car bombing happened still there too.  I drive by it all the time.  As a matter of fact, a few blocks east of there on East Sahara Avenue on the same side of the street, there is still the same Tower of Jewels jewelry store that Tony Spillotro owned, where him and his mob of burglars used to fence stuff.  Tower of Jewels still looks the same, but of course under different and legitimate ownership now.

If you watch the movie "Casino," with Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone, it is pretty much all played out what actually happened back then.  Pretty good movie and sticks to the truth.

I worked at the Stardust for a while when he was running things. He was a cold, mean bastard. I wasn't scared of many people, Him and Spelatro scared the shit out of me.
My way of dealing with them was easy. Depending on which way they were coming, I made a right smart left or right turn and hope to hell they didn't notice me.

Did you ever actually meet or talk to him personally, or did he just treat everyone like dirt?

I have heard about Lefty Rosenthal's "glare" from a few locals.  If you were the recipient of it, you knew it.

There's a female reporter from the Las Vegas Review Journal that was the brunt of the Lefty "glare."  She admitted that if she could have fell over dead right then and there, she would have.  She said she had never been looked at by someone with a combination of hate and evil at the same time.

Robert DeNeiro's portrayal of Lefty Rosenthal in "Casino" was not accurate at all.  Neither was Joe Pesci's portrayal of Tony Spillotro.  Tony was a savage mobbed up killer.

My friend here in Vegas met Tony Spillotro's daughter (about 10 years ago).  At the time, she wanted him to take her home and do her.  He politely refused.  Mainly for three reasons.  First was that he knew she was married at the time.  Second was he knew who her infamous father was and didn't want to have anything to do with that.  And thirdly, even though the last reason it was still an important determining factor in his decision, he said she was ugly.  Okay.  Sounds good to me.

The first thing you after being hired, you were told that if you want to work there do not ever speak to them. If they wanted something they would tell you.
Strangely they were good in general to the non- union people, turkeys or ham at thanksgiving and turkeys or ham and good bottle of booze at Christmas. Some got cash bonuses, others didn't.
I had forgot how good the Stardust was to work for until you asked that question.
Actually yes I did talk to him once.
There was a car parked in a tow away zone. I tried to tell him that the car belonged to Freddie Guseman.
Bad move, I only got about 15 or20 seconds of his tirade. That car was gone quick.
Life was interesting when Freddie came for his car and yes he caught me before I could get away.
He's screaming, really loud, until I told him that Lefty told me too. He stormed off to find Lefty. Scuttle butt was that the argument going well until Little Tony walked in.
' Forgot to say Guseman was a (made man) and it wasn't hard to believe.'
I guess he told both of them to calm down, I would have loved to had seen that.
I was working back stage security when Freddie came to see Barosini backstage.
He said he was sorry he went off. I probably turned 10 shades of white knowing that I was a dead man.
Totally unexpected that he did that.
So Colin ask your friend that if you didn't steal deliberately break something, did your job and keep your mouth shut these guys would treat you decent.

Hey Colin, when you get a chance stop at this website and read about Rosenthal. It is pretty interesting with interviews from Frank himself. He is pretty modest about his life, Check it out..

Very interesting interview with Lefty on that web site.  Thanks.  I enjoyed it.

One thing you can say for him....  He was loyal.  And he never, ever snitched.  You can tell how he danced around the interviewer's questions.

I laughed out loud when he said after seeing the movie "Casino" (he said he only watched it once) commenting about his portrayal by Robert DeNeiro....  Lefty said he didn't care for the fact that his character juggled on the television show.  He never juggled.  And the other thing was chilling.  He said that Robert DeNeiro would repeat himself twice asking someone to do something.....Lefty didn't do that....only once he told someone to do something....he never repeated himself.
