In the state of WA trapping or laying traps is illegal. Barring trapping, I’m tried every reasonable option known to myself to rid a yard of gophers and/or voles.

Cyanide derived gases (3 types), ditch flame torch, couple of types of pellets, ultrasonic devices (2), small electrical currents, dog urine, cat urine, wolf/cat/dog hair, dog poo, white paste that was to look like grubs, stuffing a dead, ripe, road-kill squirrel down the mounds, plate compactor over the yard?still they dig & come back up. The final straw was setting M80 charges around the perimeter holes. Impressed the neighbours, raised my red-neck, yee-haw score to an all-time high with them & apparently spurned on the gophers/voles to throw up a couple more mounds.

The dogs I do believe have adopted them.

I’m asking for aid here…there’s a septic tank & a couple of ground water lines that I do have to consider in any offer of informative disposal. I did go talk to the sheriff’s office about using a rifle/pistol to hunt them. The yard is still “county?side of the laws. Otherwise, I’m sure I’d have to farm them or have “humane?ways to terminate them. Gawd, this point I’m even willing to IV Kevorkian them if I could catch the freaking varmints.

The sheriff’s deputy on staff wasn’t keen to have me go all “Rambo?on them. Dep’t of Wildlife said I didn’t have to get a permit to shoot them. Yeah, I checked.  Heck, you could even tell me how to hunt them. I’m 3 months from taking a week off of work to set-up a blind, spot light them & begin systematic poaching of them.

So, WAMAW family, any suggestions regarding dispatching these creatures?

& YES! They have to go!!! They’ve dug tunnels under a concrete patio that’s started to sink, eaten all tulips and other flowering bulbs over the last 2 yrs, outwitted the wolf next door, and now have made the lawn hazardous to walk on due to tunnels collapsing (yes, I do use a lawn roller & fill dirt but I‘d really not like this as a hobby).

Anyone?

Thank you, Ladies!

Brief summary of trying castor oil: I opened the mounds up this week poured little bottle caps of oil & set them down inside.  The varmint(s) dug up mounds about one (1) foot away.  I soaked cotton balls with the oil & tossed them further back & in the new holes.  New mounds moved 3-4 feet away.

Mellow, I'm trying yours next!!  But I may throw a match down w/ it......

Net any holes and send a ferret/polecat into the burrows. You might loose the ferret but I'm sure the pests will soon disappear. Once you have caught them in the nets they could be used for baseball practice over a lake .

We had problems with moles and on one of my garden shows it told us to put the water hose down the freshest mound and let it run. It worked, they were flooded out, all their tunnels run into each other. You might have to do it annually depending on how infested you are but I find it cheaper and less frustrating the buying all the crap every ones says and then it ends up not working. :D

as a trained lawn tech for years, i have found there is no sound way of keeping moles or gophers out of your yard. As long as there is a food supply they will keep coming back, you can dig around your yard and put a mesh fence 15" below the surface..that works...other than that..trying to rid the lawn of grubs dont happen easy. If there is construction of buildings where they are tearing down forrests they will relocate and usually into residental neighborhoods. Ive had customers use mole/gopher hammer traps which kill...use of baits work somewhat..first you have to locate them. its not all that hard...but cant type it...tooo long to type on how. Sonar repellers aint worth crap. There are professional gels that work fairly well also..you locate them and squirt into the hole (no perve thoughts pleze )..ive heard professional varmit exterminators say..that moles just hunt GRUBS...and thats bullchit..its there main meal..but they like lots of stuff..here is a tip for you..if the moles tunnel straight...there is no food..when they zig zag...they have a good supply of it...thats where you want to apply the bait to kill them..good luck!

german farmers put kerosine in the holes
now mell...you cant do that here in the USA..that is illegal and can harm the enviorment and get into the water stream also...bad idea

A last idea...seems to work the best...is get an outdoor cat...one you dont feed alot...they are usually guaranteed to rid the lawn of them..being as moles are nocturnal, gophers are not though..that is almost a sure shot plan that ive seen do very well..

You can't even use have a heart traps? and drive them to somewhere else? That is how we finally got rid of a dozen squirrls we had. We would take them and let them go  about 8 miles away at a Mc Donalds rest stop on the turnpike. ( on the other side direction than our house.) If they wanted to come back here they became road kill...

Gopher Update:

Mien Generals! I'm happy to report that the Eastern & Southern fronts have flanking maneuvers that may be working.  I've enlisted the aid of neighbourhood hooligans (i.e. bored pre-teens & teens).  The new mercenary recruits are offered $4 a body, must be whole body.  This seems to work far better than dumb cat next door.  I came home from work w/ lovely deceased pile of bodies awaiting me by the doorstep.  It was worth the $24!

Sassy - ur gonna hafta shaw me dum trapin' dings fur um fellas.

I haven't the heart to ask Sens...LOL.  They're just so dang proud to do a community service - that's what I've told them they're providing.  I still haven't crossed that $100 mark w/ them.  There's only 1 or 2 mounds like every 4 days or so.

I know since I've started gopher genocide program the neighbours in back 2 wks ago put up a 7' high wood fence.  I'm thinking this is just a fluke.  Or they could be scared their road-kill dog might be next on the list of neighbour nuisances....(yes, that's a JOKE).

Hey I could hire your "hooligans" if they do neighbor dogs  I am trying to be patient I love animals but god knows if the neighbors dog starts in with the non stop barking at 5 am again he may dissappear
