Love is an Illusion
 
It is a shimmering mirage
That is forever just out of reach.
 
It is something that everyone searches for, yearns for
But few are lucky enough to ever find.
 
It lurks in the shadows
allowing a brief glimpse here and there
Before it disappears once again into the darkness.
 
It makes you think there is something more
Something that will take away the loneliness
That engulfs your soul.
 
It warms your heart and makes you believe
Before withdrawing it's heat
Leaving you cold and broken.
 
It destoys everything it touches
Leaving nothing but an empty shell
Of the person you thought you could be.
 
It is one of life's cruelest jokes
A way for the universe to have fun
At our expense.
 
Love is an illusion.

wow....that's a pretty painful poem....reminds me of alot of my own "dark days" several years back...I feel pretty confident that I won't ever feel that angry or hopeless again...

Well, very nice work...It really did take me back for a brief moment. Honestly, I FELT it....I remember that feeling just like it was yesterday though....the loss, the despair, the spiral, the anger..I honestly wondered at times if I would ever find peace again.
 
Oh, and by the way...I love the picture you used for this!  Kind of archetypical.

Although some may consider it dark, true poetry should express the truth. Your poem speaks your true feelings at the time you wrote it. Some of the worlds best poets lived in anguish. It is very well said.
