Even Before Its Release, World Climate Report Is Criticized as Too Optimistic

In its 2001 assessment, its third, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimated that in the next hundred years sea level would rise globally by at least a few inches and perhaps as much as three feet, a catastrophe for low-lying coastal areas and island nations.

In Paris today the panel will issue its fourth assessment, and people familiar with its deliberations say it will moderate its gloom on sea level rise, lowering its worst-case estimate.

In theory that is good news, because rising seas bring erosion and flooding to coastal areas. But a lower estimate has not been uniformly cheered.

In letters to and conversations with panel members, and in scientific journals, several climate experts said the estimate was almost certainly wrong because the panel was leaving out a growing body of data on melting glaciers and inland ice sheets, which are major contributors to sea level rise.

Those experts say that unless the finding is modified, the panel ?widely cited as an authoritative voice on climate change ?risks condemning itself to irrelevance.

Climate experts have “a great deal of confidence?in observations that sea level rise is accelerating, said Laury Miller, an oceanographer at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration who was a reviewer for part of the coming report.

Good satellite measurements date only from the last decade or so, he said, so it is hard to draw firm long-term conclusions from them. Also, he said, computer models of how glaciers and ice sheets melt cannot account for much of the observed melting, even though “presumably it is going into the ocean.?

But so far at least, he said, “the observed sea level rise has been tracking the upper range?of the 2001 estimate. “It’s pretty unequivocal,?he said.

Michael C. MacCracken, who led the Office of Climate Change in the Clinton administration and who was also a reviewer for some of the new assessment, said he could understand why scientists on the panel might be uneasy about relying too much on models. But in that event, he said, they should make it known that their estimates did not include factors like ice sheet movement and collapse, which appear to be accelerating.

In a letter to panel members on Jan. 21, Dr. MacCracken said lowering the worst-case sea level estimate would “result in a serious misimpression being conveyed to policy makers and the public.?In fact, he said, most American experts have felt that the estimate was already too optimistic.

Other experts said the panel might have missed some important new developments, because it set a December 2005 cutoff date for submission of scientific papers and other data.

Since then, researchers have reported that Greenland’s ice sheet is melting faster than had been thought, that Antarctica is feeding more melt water into the oceans than had been predicted and that the melting of glaciers around the world is accelerating rapidly.

In a brief report in today’s issue of the journal Science, an array of leading climate researchers said recent findings “raise concern that the climate system, in particular sea level, may be responding more quickly than climate models indicate.?

But in an interview last week, Susan Solomon, a climate expert at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and a leader of one of the climate panel’s working groups, said researchers were invited several times last year to comment on the group’s work. It received thousands of comments, she said.

Drew Shindell, a climate expert at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said at a House of Representatives hearing on climate science on Tuesday that part of the problem was the difficulty of making firm scientific statements about a field in which research was moving fast.

Dr. Shindell, who emphasized that he was speaking as an individual, said, “The melting of Greenland has been accelerating so incredibly rapidly that the I.P.C.C. report will already be out of date in predicting sea level rise, which will probably be much worse than is predicted in the I.P.C.C. report.?

James McCarthy, a climate expert at Harvard who was a leader in the 2001 assessment, noted in an e-mail message that the panel’s report could be changed until the moment it was made public. Nevertheless, he said he worried that unless its discussion of sea level rise was altered, the panel would so underestimate the problem that it would look “foolishly cautious and maybe even irrelevant?on the issue.

But one prominent critic of mainstream climate science, S. Fred Singer, a retired physicist, is already seizing on the report as evidence that people like former Vice President Al Gore who argue that human activity is changing the earth’s climate are now the contrarians

There are some reports in the "General Messages" section.
I emailed you, Tony.
Did you receive it?

I also have been doing lots of hard copy reading and
it is not good,
not good at all!

One really good book on this subject is
"The Weather Makers"
by Tim Flannery

Of course it does NOT get into
classified/top-secret shananigins,
but what IS revealed is really bad news.

Thanks Hal.
I did get the mail thanx and will replying just as soon as I get some moments in which to do so. Time dosen't seem to be on my side at the moment.
And I do agree.........things don't look good at all. What sort of time frame are we looking at?

Tony

Until we are prepared to concentrate on causes we are wasting our breathe.

In the 60s one of our major News Papers wrote an article on how Scientist were worried about America experimenting
with the Ionisphere, the term use was `Tickling the Ionisphere.' which is in fact a method of `boiling the ionisphere' with electromagnetic energy.
The Ionisphere was likened to the membrane that holds fluid to protect the foetus in the womb.

Add to this the deliberate destroying of oxygen producing forests....the Chemicals released into the atmosphere to undermine humans...the many countries that are releasing chemicals into the atmosphere in order to create rain, which via the likes of HAARP have deliberately created the droughts.
The unnatural electromagnetic energies created by the type of electricity we are forced to utlize even though Tesla created a less dangerous electricity....& all the Cell phones, Alarm systems, Wireless computers, etc etc which is disturbing the natural flow & killing off many species that are not as strong as humans, so more noticably first to go.
(Anyone notice the disappearance of fruit flies?)

What are we as individuals prepared to personally do to help our worlds immune system so it too can repair itself.
Do you really think it natural that Lakes disappear over night, like someone pulled a plug?
Why frogs fish etc have rained down to earth.
Does anyone know if the Us has dumped Radio active waste in the Antartic or the Seas down here (when tons of fish suddenly died & were floating on top of the water. Probably in the late 70s if they did.
Is anyone capable of building an oxygen making  machine, that a hose could run up trees & buildings or on a boat & submerged into the water.
Such ideas would be simple to ease the harm the Globals destruction, if authorities were really interested

I cannot speak for Tony. He will reply if he chooses and gets the message.

Tony and all,
It would become a total disaster in very little time,
but I happen to know that there will be some positive interference
'in-the-nick-of-time.'
'God' is a scientist and likes that
'nick-of-time' stuff.
People are learning the lesson of [d]evil
and ALL have a choice.
All the signs are showing that his patience is finally running out
and 'it' will no longer tolerate the destruction of everything
with the self-destruction of evil.
We are even now being spared the worst so that we can use the technology
that THEY are using to destroy the Earth;
to renew it.
This post is too long to get through,
so I will quit wasting my time.
I've been trying since yesterday.

When I say 'god,'
I don't mean anything supernatural.
Quantum Physics is a part of nature and
It is a Completely Conscious Universe with a total purpose
in Quantum Creation, a Synthesis between a Thesis and Anti-thesis.
Understanding Quantum Physics is an AWESOME thing!!!!

Hi All and all.
I am based in the UK and every year we see the weather gathering momentum in a "destructive" way. I think it was said today that the uk is the windiest country at this present time. The wind storms we had last month was probably the most frightening......it was the first time for me that I have seen double glazing windows bowing inwards to almost breaking point. Every month the weather men claim that the month just gone was the hottest on record. We see worldwide that the destructive side of the weather is snowballing at breakneck speed towards something that is beyond our comprehension..........and sooner rather than later.
The question remains.....is it too late? Can we stop this?
We can all do our little bit as individuals....but my thoughts are it will not have an effect. We know the governments have been experimenting with the weather....we were warned about this many years ago. Unfortunately now......we will suffer the consequences. But Hal, thanks for those reassuring words.....at the end of the day good always overcomes evil in whatever way, shape or form.!

Hi Tony Connie did not mean just that `good will overcome evil' as in cheerful light & glib words.
Her Background is science & she is saying Quantum Physics demonstrates
how we, you & I & everyone can generate a powerful energy within OURSELVES which not only makes & breaks us but influences absolutely everything.

IE. Our habitual negativity directs the energy to change the molecular strucure of our body negatively to create illness.
I come from an entirely different direction to Connie & you might say totally unscientific but I laid out stringent rules to adhere to which made the going tougher for me   but it was important to me that if in fact what we believe we make come true this is a potentially dangerous road to go down.

One of my sons recently said "Oh dont go there, you dont know what I've tried"...but ofcourse I do know, he unwittingly expresses where he's at .

He may have given it a go to change the situation but as soon as he does it he allows his old thought patterns of the situation sneak back in & he dwells on these.
My fascination has been that it was written in the bible but spun by religions.

It all boils down to AS YOU SOW SO SHALL YOU REAP.
What goes around comes around/

By your word you will be justified or condemned,....According to your faith
(belief) be it done unto you.

I dont know where to suggest you begin looking at this subject because I came to it through a rather religiously written book, riddled with the word god.
Normally if I came accross such a book by the 2nd or 3rd `god' I would have thrown it accross the room but I put it down after reading it saying fairy tale stuff wouldnt it be nice if it were true. (the book wasnt mine LOL)
It didnt occur to me to try out the theories until a week later when my life was threatened.
If someone had asked me about the book i probably wouldnt have remembered much but had they read it & discussed it with me I would have remembered more.
So it was with amazement that when I was threatened a couple of paragraphs came quickly to mind.
They were: Bless a thing (& it explained to bless was to think good of) & it will bless you.
Curse a thing & it will curse you, Place your condemnation upon anything in life & it will bounce back & hurt you. (Newcomers to computers know it is very attuned to our fear)
That was over 35yrs ago & I still remember it.
It also said bless where the trouble is coming from & ask for protection.
Then against every emotion within me I had a go..
Later I RATIONALISED the situation & came up with the word `coincidence'
my safety had nothing to do with the book.
It was as though life said `look here girlie youve been asking for answers (what the hells life all about) you were given an answer & you ignored it,we'll go through it once more.'
My life was threatened again a week later, this time through cowardess I wasnt arguing against my rejection of Religion. I couldnt think of anything good about the person so I just said "I bless you for the power of good flowing in you through you & for you" (in my mind) It was amazing to me just how much can go through the mind in 1/2 a second flat.
This time I KNEW with my deepest intuition there was something more to this. I still wasnt prepared to ressurect my childhood belief in god & still havent but now I know why Religion is a con.
Base any lie on fact & you suck in the masses.

The younger generation appear to be drawn to the Author Louise Hay
she is involved with the Christian Science movement but that doesnt alter her down to earth sense.
The author of my first book was Catherine Ponder of the Unity Church.
I found the people in the movement here had no concept of what they were learning, it appeared like any other religion.
However I dislike any organised movement because they tend to create rigid mindsets.
But to learn quantum physics it require a preparedness to be totally honest about yourself & beliefs (even to know what you believe) & to step aside from self recrimination.
Hope this helps if you are interested.
