ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) The head of the Republican Women of Otero County says she won't resign that office and rejected a request to resign from the county GOP's executive committee after writing a letter calling Barack Obama ''a Muslim socialist'' and saying, ''I believe Muslims are our enemies.''
The letter from Marcia Stirman, a 56-year-old interior decorator, was published Oct. 21 in the Alamogordo Daily News. The letter, ''Why I'm a Republican,'' listed 16 reasons for her party affiliation. She wrote it after the newspaper published another letter titled ''Why I'm a Democrat.''
Stirman's letter prompted a quick response from the New Mexico Republican Party, which said she does not speak for the party and that her comments do not reflect its values and beliefs.
Otero County GOP Chairwoman Sassy Tinling said Oct. 23 the county party's executive committee would meet to ask Stirman to resign as head of the Republican Women.
But Stirman said Thursday neither Tinling nor the county party has asked her to step down from the post, and that she plans to seek another two-year term as head of the group when it elects officers next Wednesday.
Stirman said she received a letter Tuesday from Tinling asking her to resign from the county GOP executive committee by Friday, but said she has no plans to do so.
The Associated Press left a message Friday seeking comment from Tinling.
Stirman said her comments have been misunderstood and she never meant to suggest all Muslims are enemies of the U.S., only those ''who are trying to kill us.''
She added: ''Can you say that all Christians are good? Absolutely not.''
She said she's received more than 700 telephone calls at her home about the letter, three-quarters of them positive. She said, however, some calls were threatening and she filed a police report.
Her letter prompted Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a national Islamic group, to call on state and national Republican Party officials to repudiate her ''divisive and intolerant views'' and ''anti-Muslim comments.''
Asked to respond, Stirman told The Associated Press last week: ''I don't trust them at all. They've sworn across the world that they are our enemies. Why we're trying to elect one is beside me.''
Obama's Kenyan father was Muslim, but Obama grew up in a Christian family. Although he has professed his Christianity repeatedly and explained how his Christian faith shapes his politics, he has battled Internet-fueled rumors throughout the campaign that he is Muslim.
