Xer, I saw your comment (and pictures) about wishing to go Hot Air Ballooning in your lifetime.  You should do it!!!

Back in 1987, I met a man who owned his own Hot Air Balloon, and was looking for someone to work for him as Crew Chief.   When I got laid off from my consultant job in El Paso, TX, I decided to take him up on his offer.  I moved with him to Evergreen, Colorado,  and we spent the next 18 months travelling all over the country with his Balloon "Higher Love" (and we'd CRANK that song on the stereo when we'd be coming back into the Launch area after a successful flight.....)   We did an "International Flight" (flying from Juarez, Mexico, back into El Paso, Texas.)  We did a "Continental Divide Flight" (flying over the Continental Divide in Colorado.)  We spent one Fourth of July in Montrose, Colorado (LOVE the people there, and wanted to move there someday....)  Another Fourth of July in Columbia, SC (also very friendly people, but the weather there isn't as nice as Colorado.)   We did a "Balloon Rodeo" up in Clayton, NM (where the Balloon had to fly from point "A" to point "B" with a "postal bag" aboard.  When we landed, the horses (with riders) would grab the bag from the Balloon Pilot, then race back to point "A" with the bag.  First one back gets the prize!)   Sure got a clue about how horses don't like that noise the propane burners make!!!

I was also with him during two Fiesta's (the 10-day Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque every Columbus Day is the BIGGEST Balloon Fiesta in the World - with over 600 balloons trying to compete....)  That chunk of time sure put a dent into my resume, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Anyway, the point in sharing some of my history with you is to tell you to keep an eye out for local Balloon get-togethers.  Some of the Pilots will take a person for a short ride in exchange for helping "crew" (helping pull the envelope out onto the ground to get inflated, holding the throat open while the huge fan blows the cold air into the envelope, and helping pack everything up when the morning is done.)   The Professional Pilots usually have a hired crew, and will charge riders up to $200 for a 20-minute or so ride.  The other Pilots (like the dude I worked for) are doing the Flying for FUN, not money, and will use local folks for Crew and take riders for free in exchange.  Crew Chief's job is to round up these volunteers, teach and watch them do the work so neither they nor the Balloon is damaged, then drive the chase vehicle to be wherever the Balloon eventually lands.  There's no steering these Dragons, you know....they just float wherever the wind blows, and the Pilot must learn to navigate the winds at various levels to go various directions.....

There's no sensation of movement while you're in the basket, since the balloon is moving with the wind.  You look at the ground below to verify that you are moving!   The only problem comes when the landing is rough (I got dumped completely out of a basket once on a "hard landing" - only bruises, but I've seen broken bones....)   MOST landings are "soft" however, so no need to worry.   Just don't fly anywhere there are lots of Power Lines.  I swear Hot Air Balloons gravitate toward them like they're magnetic or something!

So, I say - GO DO IT!  Take pictures (and videos) and be able to brag that you "Rode with the Dragons!"

Sorry, Pikes.  I'm going to try to re-load the pix (I exceeded my storage limit....)   But, yes, that ground was hard as a rock - but it's that way in that area of New Mexico all the time!

My gawd, Gryphon! Those pictures are huge! No wonder you went over your space limit. MSN is so niggardly, just one of those would put me over my limit. That's why I make my pix so small. MSN is constantly informing me I am exceeding my limits. Stingy jerks!

Lord Almighty, girl, you are gorgeous! No wonder guys were always hitting on you!

Love the Cheve pickup. What year was it, do you know?

It's got to be a real trick keeping those balloons at the same height as they rise. Thank you so much for sharing those photos with us. May I download them for screen-savers? Please?

By the way, if you ever see one of my photos you would like a larger copy of for a screen-saver/background for your monitor, just ask. I'll delete some others and post a larger copy for you.

Um, sorry for the html snafu in post #9. I won't bother deleting it this time though. Only the word did was supposed to be italicized.

Xer is right. You are (oh man!) as pretty as you are intelligent!

Those two balloons carrying the flag- I see as a bikini for someone built like Dolly Parton. Gonna spend a few minutes in the photo shop!

Awww.....you guys make me blush!   Remember, those photos were taken a long time ago!

Yes, Xer, you may "borrow" any pictures I post.   I had no control over how my scanner "copies" the pictures onto my PC.   I just push the button....     It took a while to FIND the album since it wasn't stashed with the other photo albums....  So, once I found the album, I picked out some of the pictures, scanned about a dozen, then discovered I couldn't upload but a few at a time.   I'll spend some time tomorrow trying to figure out how to make them smaller, so I can show you the rest.  I have a BUNCH of pics of the "Special Shapes" balloons that ya'll will just be amazed over....

OK.  After installing some software (PrintShopPhotoPro), I managed to resize 16 pictures so I could get them all into the Album.   Enjoy....

Gryphon, you think you might have gone a little overboard on shrinking your pictures? Some really deserve to be larger, in particular I'm thinking, Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and Special Shapes Balloons.

Yes! I loved the witch... and the chilis! What is that greenish looking balloon to the right of the bunny? It's amazing what people will spend their money on. Yes, America, the Islamists are correct, we are decadent!

Make you blush? Good! Long time ago. Means only it was a long time ago. Beauty like yours doesn't diminish to those who see a larger picture.

I photoshopped those balloons and the flag, as a bikini front, onto a model. Don't know if I should share it though. It's a little provocative! Was a fun little exercise.

Xer, the big "greenish looking balloon to the right of the bunny" is the Kool Cigarettes Balloon (supposed to look like a race car.....)  I'll add the larger-sized Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta picture to the album for you.....   Since all the others are so small, there should be room for one big one.....

Pikes, thank you for your kind words.  When I look in my mirror these days, however, I see an old woman....

When I look in my mirror these days, however, I see an old woman....

Me too.....

scared the snot out of me 'til I realized it was my wife!

More and more I can relate to those people who think they are trapped in the wrong body. Poor boys thinking they a girl trapped in the wrong body. Girls thinking they are a boy trapped in the wrong body. And me, thinking I am a kid trapped in an old fart's body!
