My answers:   1. After the ice cube melts, the level in the glass will be higher than it was before you added the ice cube.  You are adding a volume of water, after all....  I LOVED this experiment in school.  How the level rose when you added the ice,  lowered as the ice melted, but ultimately ended up above original level.  Perfect example of how water expands when it freezes.... 
 
2.  Other than mechanical clothes dryers utilizing some form of energy, why would they not be environmentally friendly?   I remember trying to hang clothes on a line when the temps were below freezing.   The clothes don't really DRY.  Ever try to fold a frozen sheet?  Or a frozen pair of dungarees?    I'll keep my electric clothes dryer, thankyouverymuch! 
 
Not cool, though, that a neighborhood could dictate what can and cannot be within your own property lines.  I'm sure glad I'm finally living Rural.  Heck, we don't even have building inspectors here!
