Today's "Family" Scripture by Jason Hunt *January 3, 2009*

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Well then, how do you like them apples? I once said to my daughter after she told me I was being too harsh with her; 'If you don't want me to talk to you like that, then don't do anything wrong". According to God's Word to Paul, what I said to Ashley was contrary to His Word.
My Ashley is a very good kid, (God only gives you as much as you can handle) and if she is angry because of the way I discipline her than I need to reconsider how I handle her up bringing. Here are some tips we can use;
 - We have to discipline in the instruction of the Lord. Compare the way you discipline with the way God does. He is slow to anger & forgiving (Exodus 34:6 The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out,   Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.)
 - Use God's Word to enforce the rules and principles. Then if your child disagrees with you they are disagreeing with His Word.
 - Don't discipline when you are angry, who thinks straight when they are angry? Check out Proverbs if you disagree.
 -  If you are angry, do what you need to do to calm down, pray and discern how God wants you to deal with the issue. (Psalm 30:5 For his anger lasts only a moment,but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.)
 - Be in His Word, seek God's heart on the matter. If we have His character than according to Ephesians 6:4 when we instruct and discipline our children they won't be angry with us but will be convicted and educated.

God, our Father; reveal Your heart to us Lord. May we be in Your Word to discern how to discipline and instruct our children. Humble us that we will not become harsh with those under our authority. May we desire to bring up our children according to Your Word that they would not anger and grow a hard heart. Thank You Gracious Father for Your Living Word.
In Jesus' Name.
Amen.
