Last Updated: 02-21-2007 10:23 AM Health officials warn of new food outbreak (KAAL)---Health officials recalled more than 52-thousand pounds of Oscar Meyer Ready-To-Eat chicken breast strips this morning. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says some packages may be contaminated with Listeria. Health officials say Listeriosis can potentially cause high fever, severe headache, and nausea. The recall affects all six-ounce packages that bear the number "P-1-9-6-7-6" inside the front of the package. On the back of each package is a use by date of April 19, 2007. No illnesses have been reported as a result of the recall.
The Oscar Meyer recall comes on the heels of a similar recall for two brands of peanut butter. And now dole has announced it's pulling some fresh produce from store shelves. From last summer’s outbreak of E-Coli in bagged spinach, to the problems with tainted lettuce found at taco john's last December there seems to be an increased concern for food-born illnesses. But public health officials say recalls are common...a way for companies to protect from potentially dangerous products. And consumers say, as long as they don't get sick, there's nothing to worry about. When you browse the aisles of your grocery store, you're probably choosing food for you and your family. But for Marsha Evens, her bi-weekly trip to the store means buying food for 44 people at a group home. "It’s really important to know what's going on out there as far as food is concerned and what are the problems," Marsha Evans says. Evens keeps track of the latest recalls. She says pulling products might bring negative attention to a particular brand, but it's worth it to keep everyone safe. Other shoppers we talked to say they're not too concerned. "I’m fine with whatever the government sets for standards and I don't give it a minutes thought when i come to the grocery store," according to Dave Schwaller. “In fact I feel kind of sorry for the stores that have to go through all this," Ann Koenig The threat of salmonella spurred the latest outbreak of re-calls. "Peter Pan" and "Great Value" brand peanut butter have sickened five people in Minnesota. Also, Dole just announced it was pulling cantaloupes because of salmonella, no reports of illness have yet been filed. |
