Remember to Remember
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
Luke 22:19
James McGaugh, a memory expert at the University of California at Irvine, was stumped by a woman who could remember every detail of her entire life. Give her a date and she could recall the day of the week, the weather, personal details of her life, and major news events that occurred. After putting her through a battery of tests, McGaugh could find no explanation for her perfect memory.
Most people forget far more than they can recall even though scientists suggest all our sensory experiences are stored in the brain. Our weak memories prompted Jesus Christ to institute a "memory maker"-a memorial meal by which we would call to mind frequently His death and resurrection and evaluate our lives in light of those events. The Lord's Table is a way to review-and thus never forget-Christ's sacrifice for sin and His resurrection unto new life. We participate in that Table "in remembrance of [Him]."
It's difficult to maintain passion for that which we don't think about often. If your passion for Christ is waning, remember to remember what He has done for you by taking your place at His Table.
When you drink from the stream, remember the spring.
