What do you think about getting some bread/ english muffins/ etc from the day old store and adding that to the dog food to cut down or add as a filler. My mom does that...but then she feeds crap food also... what are some thoughts....

In my dane experience not a great idea. They need to have a specific diet and it is important to control the Fillers. That is why you feed them a high quality food and not the store brand due to the amount of fillers. Now with bread depending on the age of your dane a half peanutbutter sandwich a day would be ok but it should not replace there food it is just addition like a treat.

IMO, adding bread to cheap food that's already full of fillers is just a very bad idea.

My dogs all LOVE bread of any kind, but they only get a couple of bites now and then as a treat. Two reasons for this - the most important reason is the high salt content in any commercial bread; the other reason is just that it sticks to their teeth and increases the rate of tartar buildup (I confess to not brushing their teeth ever).

A young healthy dog may do alright eating a fair bit of bread (beats the heck out of starvation, nutritionally). One of mine is already in early kidney failure and another (both non-Danes) is on the verge of it, so I carefully watch their salt intake - much more than when they were young and healthy and could even get the odd sausage or piece of ham or such.

Given that your mum feeds crap food anyway, you could google up some nutritional info to see if the bread might be as good for her dog(s) as the food she is feeding.

- Katy :-)
