Something that has been done by rescues I work with, is to have the meds on hand and then when they are prescribed by a vet, they will then know the proper dosage and can use the meds without having to purchase new meds. Meds can expire though, so the best thing is if there is an organization that is composed of numerous rescue groups (Wisconsin has a group called AWARE), where they work together and could contact tons of other groups to see if anyone had a dog in need of that specific medicine so it didn't expire.
