This from SOS Maddie about Clarence using the press to mount a campaign against the PJ this weekend:
"The new campaign, which seems to want at all costs to remove any credit due to the detective’s work, is not taking account of the participation of the UK police in the enquiry or of the different pressures exerted by UK diplomats.
Despite what several media outlets have tried to stress (in particular the Daily Mail and the Mirror), the enquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is not the sole responsibility of the PJ. On the very night of her disappearance, the UK ambassador in Lisbon and the Consul in the Algarve (who have since left their positions) requested that the UK authorities be allowed to take part in the investigation. A request which was quickly accepted by the Portuguese government, and carried forward by the PJ senior officers, who gave free rein to the UK police who arrived in PDL on the 4th May.
As several sources in the Leicestershire police have confirmed, the collaboration with the UK police has consolidated the line of enquiry started by the PJ ?in particular after the use of the tracker dogs which led to them finding several samples; and after the expertise of the FSS in Birmingham and other laboratories.
In opposition to the work carried out by the two police forces as they try to work out who is responsible and to find Madeleine, there have been several UK diplomats and politicians who have intervened in the case to defend Kate and Gerry McCann. In fact this is was how the couple’s current spokesman came on the scene: it was the Prime-Minister in person who took the decision to urgently send over the person responsible for the Media Monitoring Unit, Clarence Mitchell, to PDL where he replaced Sheree Dodd (who had been unenthusiastic in her defence of the couple).
Sheree Dodd, like all of the principal diplomats in the various posts at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance, have since left Portugal."
