--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This statement deserves a thread of its own - the statement came through this afternoon on the 'Sign Petition to Jacqui Smith' thread - many of us emailed her and the Home Office, demanding clarification of reports in Correio di Mahna and on Paolo Reis's thread that the Home Secretary is delaying interviewing of the Tapas 7:
Please be advised, we have been asked by the Home Office to give their response to this thread, which follows:
“It is not our usual policy to comment on individual cases, however the Home Office has not received a formal request for Mutual Legal Assistance concerning the McCann investigation. It is not appropriate to comment further.”
I have emailed this to Correio di Mahna (I think!! via their website), but calling all Portuguese posters - Please, please publicise this response from the Home Office to the Mirror Forum to your national press!! We cannot allow the British government to try and hide any stalling on the McCann case by using the excuse of Portuguese bureaucracy!!

Well done Jackie!
And it won't do any harm to remind the political classes who read these boards that they are our servants, not our masters.

I am sorry but I don't understand what is going on here. I thought the Original Post said that no request for mutual assistance had been received.

In other words, the request has not yet been received and Mr Reis is talking boll&cks.
What a complete surprise that was

Yes, it does. They were sent on a CD and they are now searching their post room and the local sorting office trying to find it.

If the Home Office IS stalling on this, then it's unforgiveable.
But are we sure that they HAVE been approached by Portugal yet?
Sorry, but I'm not up to date on news.
I know that this has been the intention, to ask for Home Office approval to reinterview the McCanns and their friends, but how do we know that the request has been made yet? We obviously can't believe everything we believe in the papers.

Not for the first time we are sat wondering just how obtuse people can be.
The Home Office take the troublke to reply, denying the request has yet been made.
And all the usual suspects bleat, moan and castigate them for dragging their feet.

I previously read that it had been received and that Jacqui Smith was delaying her response.
Not sure really!
I've gotten to the stage where I don't know what or who to believe.
There is so much spin and so much ambiguous reporting going on!

Nice one JackieL
You read my mind, I was going to say the same.
Keep us posted, it will be really interesting to find out just who is telling the truth.

Jackiel your enthusiasm is to be admired, but you need to step back for a mo, and consider whether the Home Office or Minister in the UK government is going to jump and act on a protest by a cyberspace forum made up of about 100 posters tops...Do you honestly think so?? hmm!

We have to keep trying, Tripz. In the past, I translated letters for Amnesty International (note to Esther, who told me the Fund was being run on Amnesty International guidelines). Sometimes, just one or two letters kept someone alive. Never for a moment doubt the power of the written word.
When the McCanns left Praia de Luz I believe they and their lawyers took a calculated risk that the bureaucracy involved in bringing them back for any sort of questioning in Portugal would outlive any will for justice that might exist to force them to answer for their actions.
I feel it is our duty, as members of this Forum, to insist that the case isn't lost in a bureaucratic nightmare. Now the McCanns have returned to this country and are refusing to answer the PJ's questions and are also refusing to return to Portugal unless the "arguido" status is lifted, of course there are difficulties in making them account for their actions, but these difficulties are not insurmountable.
By showing the Home Office that we are observing every move we CAN make a difference.
Don't be daft. You are just a minor irritation. Your demands and opinions will not make the slightest difference. But do keep yourself amused, by all means.

"...................has not received a formal request" probably means that the H.O. knows one is on its way, but has not found its way through all the channels. "Formal" would indicate that they have received the request from the PT Prosecutor by fax, for example. Just hoping, anyway.

OK, Ive PM'd the moderator who posted the email asking for clarification.
Ive asked him who sent the email (name, email address etc), the data and time when the email was received, and Ive asked him to post the email the mirror group received in full.
This situation is laughable, people believe its perfectly acceptable to question politicians, and yet not acceptable to question a moderator on forum hiding behind an alias !

Since in the US I am used to Washington politicians not saying truly what they really mean, the statement from the Home Office having not yet received the rogatory letters through Mutual Legal Aid is no doubt true. The question to the Home Secretary should have been: Have you received the PJ rogatory letters from EUROJUST?
Note that Eurojust is seeing an increasing number of cases under its remit: cross border crime saw a 29% increase between 2006 and 2007. The agency was created to improve the fight against serious crime and is seen as the future of any future European Public Prosecutor's office, the creation of which is provided for under the Lisbon Treaty. It also has the task of enhancing "the effectiveness of national authorities when they are dealing with the investigation and prosecution of cross-border and organized crime."
With that latter mandate in mind, I am sure that the prosecutors and magistrates, who work for Eurojust, are following the McCann case with great interest, now that three countries are involved: Madeleine's Fund in the UK, Metodo3 in Spain, and the McCann investigation in Portugal.
The Home Office will not be able to deny the receipt of the rogatory letters once Eurojust has released them to their custody.

I hope you get a reply, as I do think the post could have been elaborated on more at the time. I am more interested now in who called said Mod a troll though
