Are you talking about MirrorIain's post? Might the Home Secretary have been sneakiy answering the question that wasn't answered?

Just posting quickly to say hello folks, am reading and digesting all the valuable information being posted here, much appreciated. Tonight I have been watching Coronation Street and Vera's death. I am so sad!
Hope to return to join in the debates and discussions with a little more sanity when I have recovered. For the benefit of our overseas posters, vera is just a soap opera character, but one who I have grown quite attached to over the last 30 years!
Sorry to interrupt thread!

In Correio di Mahna yesterday and on Paolo Reis's blog there were reports that Jacqui Smith the Home Secretary was delaying actioning the rogatory letters from Portugal and had not agreed as yet to the interviewing of the Tapas 7.
In response to this, many of us emailed the Home Office. Within a few hours MirrorIain posted a reply that the Home Office had sent to the Forum. It is exactly the same as the reply I received today (and I know Antigone did too) in response to my email.
To make things clearer, here is my email to Jacqui Smith and the response from the Home Office:-
To: The Home Secretary Jacqui Smith
From: Real Name & Home address
Dear Madam,
I was extremely disturbed to read in the Portuguese press today, speculation that you have delayed interviewing by Scotland Yard of the so-called "Tapas 7" - friends of the parents of Madeleine McCann in the police investigation into her disappearance.
Bearing in mind the vaunting by the McCann family of Gordon Brown's personal phone calls to Gerry McCann and also Gordon Brown's personal intervention in ensuring the description of a man supposedly carrying a child away from the holiday apartment on the evening that Madeleine disappeared was released by the local police, I would urge you to assure the public that there will be NO further political involvement in a case which should be handled solely by the Portuguese and British police and the judiciary.
I look forward to your reply.
Kind regards.

REPLY FROM THE HOME OFFICE:
Thank you for your e-mail to the Home Secretary.
It is not our usual policy to comment on individual cases, however the Home Office has not received a formal request for Mutual Legal Assistance concerning the McCann investigation. It is not appropriate to comment further.
I hope this is helpful.

I'm back. We survived the dentist, and he survived us.
Cassandra, in case no one's got back to you yet, there was a discussion about this time yesterday regarding a post made by MirrorIain (who is admin, and thus a paid employee of the Mirror) in which he stated he had been asked by the Home Office to post its comment on the apparent delay with the letters rogatory. That post seems to indicate that the delay isn't on the Home Office's end.
It has a copy of the family portrait -- you know, the one with G&K each holding a twin and looking like a happy family of four, except there is also little Madeleine sitting in the foreground. This is a bit of a frivolous point, but every time I see that photo I think that she looks like she's about to get up and run out of it -- and that no one seems to notice. She just doesn't look like part of the fold. Strange, but one would think that they would have chosen a photo where she looked loved.

As I have posted elsewhere in this forum, I do not believe that Jacqui Smith was answering the question as to whether she has received the rogatory letters. A "formal request for Mutual Legal Assistance" cannot be construed as the same as a rogatory letter. Further, I thought these letters were being sent through Eurojust and NOT through Mutual Legal Assistance.

So, we are no wiser regarding this matter - the report on the SOS Maddie site definitely says that a British (ministry?) source had said that the letters had been received, and we also have the denial from Jacqui Smith's office.
I know which version I would put my money on
That's it for me tonight - TTFN

In my opinion, the rogatory letters have been sent and received...and probably sanctioned too....

Eurosjust, Mutual Legal Assistance and Rogatory letters are not mutually exclusive. The Rogatory letters ask for Mutual Legal Assistance and go through Eurojust to do so.
