Madeleine police are 'corrupt and amateur'

Portuguese police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have been accused of being corrupt and carrying out a flawed investigation.
The accusations are contained in a letter sent from the office of British MEP Roger Knapman to a woman who had lobbied several MEPs complaining of the damage the case was doing to UK-Portugal relations.
The letter, sent from the office of the MEP for the South-West of England, says: "The Portuguese police and judicial system is known to be suspect.
"Elements of the police are corrupt... the original police investigation was amateurish and flawed.
"It is important to realise that Portugal has no real history of citizen's rights and liberties or democracy."
It points out that Portugal became a democracy only 30 years ago.
The letter was written on Mr Knapman's behalf, by Piers Merchant, a former Tory MP who was forced to quit after his affair with a 17-year-old hostess.
He now works as an assistant to Mr Knapman at the UK Independence Party.
The national director of Portugal's Policia Judicial federation said Mr Merchant's comments were "unacceptable and irresponsible". |

The reason the posts have been removed is because they were untrue. At no time did Mr Merchant say that the previous head of the investigation had been charged with corruption, or that the police were corrupt.
I do not know how this lady BB became in possession of the e-mail saying such things, but I have a copy of the original e-mail sent to her from Mr Merchant which is different from the one she posted on this forum.
The important paragraph is:

I hope this clears up the matter. There is no conspiracy, just the UK Independence Party preferring that people did not publish fabricated stories about them. It is unfortunate that the original post has resulted in untrue stories being published in the Portuguese press, and that Mr Merchant has been receiving abusive comments because of the actions of some people. It means a lot of extra work because of the mendacious actions of one, or a few, individuals.[/quote]

I thought the important paragraph was:

in the context of:

I don't think the press and the media would be taking such a huge gamble on this if they had not been in receipt of the original email.
How does Jessica respond to it being in the Daily Mail? Are they prepared to risk a defamation case on little more than hearsay too? |

So do you reckon that he tampered with what he'd stated in the original reply to you and is claiming you've misquoted him? Easy to change an email though isn't it? Is there anyone techy here who can say whether there's a way of working out if emails have been fiddled with after being sent?[/quote]

The original email will probably still be on the ISP servers. Especially Piers' because he used a web based yahoo email account.
People working from home using a home or web email account usually BCC sent emails to their work email address. If that's what Piers usually does, he's snookered, and if that's what he usually does and didn't do for this particular email - checkmate !

LeeAnneDeVette If the allegations of conspiracy at government levels are correct, though, I'd be extremely, extremely nervous now. You know what they're like. They make seek revenge. At a minimum, if the conspiracy allegations are correct, I suspect bb can expect about ten years of income tax audits. Politicians can be very very crafty when run afoul of. Good luck, bb! Acts of courage take years of courage in some instances, but I've no doubt after reading your posts that you're up to the job and will be well supported by all your friends here.
