MADELEINE: £1M WAR FOR MCCANN INTERVIEW By David Pilditch in Praia da Luz AMERICA’S top chat show hosts are locked in a bidding war for an exclusive interview with the parents of Madeleine McCann. Oprah Winfrey and Barbara Walters have each pledged £1million in an attempt to get them in front of the TV cameras, it emerged yesterday.
And the McCanns, who remain suspects in their four-year-old daughter’s disappearance, are considering taking the cash from one of the rivals to top up a fund which was set up to help find her.
The Find Madeleine Appeal, which once stood at £1.2million through donations from the public, is dwindling at an alarming rate and is said to have plunged to less than £400,000. Fears are growing the money could run out within weeks because of vast spending on private detectives and advertising.
The couple’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell confirmed that they were “talking?to representatives of both chat show giants.
But he insisted money would not be the deciding factor. The couple would go for the show that best helped their search for Madeleine.
The disclosure that they are planning a big-money TV appearance comes just two weeks after they were criticised for considering selling movie and book rights to their story.
Award-winning Oprah, 53, a billionaire, bills herself as “America’s best friend?and “one of the most influential women in the world?
Her 1993 interview with troubled pop star Michael Jackson pulled in 100 million viewers. <FORM action=/posts/search/> Rival Barbara, Walters, 78 ?who prides herself on her “personality and scoops??claims she has interviewed more statesmen and stars than any other journalist in history.
Her 1999 grilling of Monica Lewinsky about her fling with former US president Bill Clinton attracted 74 million viewers.
Mr Mitchell said: “We’ve been approached by representatives for both Oprah and Barbara. They want an exclusive interview with Kate and Gerry. We are discussing it but it doesn’t mean we are doing it. Nothing has been agreed.?BR> A family source said the McCanns had several discussions with Oprah’s spokesman but “more conversations?with Barbara’s.
The source added: “Barbara is like royalty over there and has done every major interview with the presidents and the biggest stars.
“Her people said, ‘We have the biggest show in the States with an audience of 15 million from East to West??BR> But Mr Mitchell stressed: “We are not in the market for selling Kate and Gerry’s story to the highest bidder. And we are not impressed by big names. We talk to media from all over the world.?BR> Mr Mitchell said the couple would only consider a TV interview or documentary film if it was “constructive and helpful?in the search for Madeleine or led to “a long-term change?in procedures to help find missing children.
Only then would contributions or donations to a special fund be welcome, he added.
The McCanns say they have been impressed by a system in America called Amber Alert which triggers an emergency system nationwide when a child is reported missing. They want to campaign for a similar system to be set up in Europe.
But both chat show hosts may be disappointed about how much information they can glean from the McCanns.
Under Portuguese law the couple’s status as suspects bans them from talking publicly about the investigation.
Portuguese police have faced fierce criticism over the handling of the case and their actions in the crucial early hours after Madeleine disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3 last year.

<FORM action=/posts/search/> DIANEH 26.01.08, 2:54am Too many people make too many assumptions. If the McCanns were going to do an interview and put the money into their own bank account, then you and others would have something to compain about. They have stated over and over that any money raised will go to Madeleine's fund. They do not control that money, it is controlled by trustees. And unless you are one of the many on here who see a conspiracy under every rock, let the trustees do their job and to keep looking for Madeleine on an international scale, takes a great deal of money. The McCanns are not searching their local block, they cant do it by themselves. And it the worst happens and Madeleine will never be coming home again, then any money left over will go to help establish something similar to the US' Amber alert. The trustess will also see to that.

Perhaps you do not like what I am saying, if you do not then try and think about why you do not like what I am saying, it may just be because my words are hitting home.
Are you really against Madeleine's parents finding her? Do you call being left in the hands of strangers (nice way to put it) because you think her parents should not make money to find her, do you think this is justice for Madelene?
You do not think her parents should do this because you think you know what has happened to Madeleine, so everything else is futile? You have a very high opinion of yourself, you and a lot of others on here, i wish i could be so cock sure that I know Madeleine is dead and not alive somewhere being abused by some evil personified.
However, i cant be so while I feel like this I will continue to help and support her parents in any small way that I possibly can.

?Posted by: TomTom ?Report Comment ROSIPOPAS 26.01.08, 2:41am These two people have made crass errors since moment 1.
They show less worry, as far as I am concerned, about finding their daughter than they do about getting themselves off.
I believe they know full well Madeleine will NOT come back and I believe that although they did not murder her or kill her, they know very well what happened.
As such, I will not say "oh well, I had my say".
I have my say because I TRULY BELIEVE WHAT I POST.
Their attitude stinks. Their actions stink. Their motives stink. All seems rotten, as far as I can see, coming from camp McCann.
And I WILL HAVE MY SAY contrary to what you and they want people like me to do. BECAUSE SOME OF US COULD CARE LESS ABOUT MONEY AND CARE MORE ABOUT MADELEINE. REWARD? They NEVER even mention it. Not that I would ever accept it, were I to find a missing child, but the point is why do they not mention it? All that is mentioned is the money they need for the fund. FOr which children, the elderly and less fortunate contributed in good faith. They kept their house and even managed to by a 4 x 4. Are we suppose to feel bad for them? How many of those that contributed towards the fund live in such homes or buy such vehicles?
Wipe your own conscience, Rosiepops, before you ask others to do it. ?Posted by: alsabelIa ?Report Comment TOMTOM 26.01.08, 2:41am maybe I am getting upset because a child is missing, she could still be alive and is suffering at the hands of goodness knows what and no one is looking for her except the agencies that her parents are paying to help find her and all people can do on here is issue hate filled post after hate filled post and now they don't even want her parents to get the money to look for her?
meanwhile Madeleine maybe waiting for someone, anyone to help her. I find that thought not merely upsetting, i find it distressing and frightening.
For goodness sake back off of her parents and leave them alone to try and find their daughter, enough is enough.

I believe the McCanns did not have involvement in Madeleine's disappearance, always have, till I know evidentially otherwise. I can and will, indeed MUST riticise this media money bandwaggon they are on.
I also am quite sure the Healy's and McCanns are not too happy about the way this is going. But then the McCanns, ie Kate an Gerry would not listen to others. That, is mainly their problem. Wrong advisors. Often. Too often.
I want Madeleine found. I want it soon. I want whoever responsibe to have justice too and how!!!!! But they are doing themselves no favours.
I can just see the US questions, have you a case? Did she go in it? Where did you drop it in the sea like the recent.............aaaaaarrrrrggghhh... America will not respect Portuguese arguido status. They will wind Gerry and Kate up. Kate will look sad, Gerry will storm off....end of end of
end of credibility for them, the little they have left.
Get the focus back on MADELEINe
WHERE IT ALWAYS SHOULD HAVE BEEN, FIRST AND LAST.
Funding? Yes. But you have to contribute to your own fund FIRST to be seen t do so before begging......
You know that deep down Rosiepops.

In their position I would do exactly the same as them, exactly. I would do worse than that, i would do anything to get money to pay for someone to find my child.
I am honest enough to admit it, i am realist too, they need money for the fund (not themselves) to find Madeleine. I hope they get as much as they can and I hope too that perhaps they will not have to and by some miracle little Madeleine will be found.
All very easy for us to judge and talk non stop, Madeleine is not out child, remember that when the next knee jerk reaction comes along.
Poor Madeleine, cut off the funds to help find her, where is the justice in that for this little girl?
I am going to bed, I have had enough of this public hand wringing for one night.

Both Kate and Gerry McCann lost all credibility on their first TV interview.

This is totally disgracefull & should never be allowed.

LEAVE THEM ALONE AND LET THEM FIND THEIR DAUGHTER?? ROSIE??? 26.01.08, 2:17am I wish they would be alone with competent investigators.
I wish they would concentrate on finding Madeleine.
Not money generating via silly media spotlight programmes. This is not a proper way to carry this on or forward sensibly and in a seemly manner at all. Their image is poor now, this is going to shoot it down in flames, believe me. This is the wrong angle to take. Focussing on the money not the child is the way it is seen rightly or wrongly, but that is what is coming across.
You know I have a child and would move heaven and earth to find her but would, I hope, find trustworthy detectives who do not act like idiots to help find her. Not to generate money, help find HER. I would not have my mortgage paId for by a fund, I would already have sold my house....then once that ran dry, yes, and only then, would I 'beg' for help. I could not stomach taking donations from elderly, kids, poorer people than I to pay my mortage on a large grand house before I had exhausted my own personal finances. Then and only then, would I beg for help o aid and believe me beg I would. But I am not connected as they seem to be. That is why, Rosiepops. they have now lost touch with the harm done by their PR advisors, personal detectives that produce nothing, spin doctors changing every now and then along with PI's......change means unrest at this level. It is not right. and.....you feel this too Rosiepops or you are not the honest, fair, upright person I know you to be. It shows the McCanns in a very very grasping light. Not prepared to contribute to their own fund for their on daughter before the public?? Come On....
sorry to have to disagree with you after all this time, but I feel very strongly about this.

take care though, and I mean that.

It's going to be poor us again and they will not admit their child abuse by saying theydeliberately left their 3 toddlers every night whilst they were on the razz and they will also play the look how the media hounds us>
The media and the public have seen through their tissue of lies and showing the gruesome twosome for what they are, abusive neglectful parents who didn't give a toss about the welfare of their kids.
Well in america child abandoment is serious crime and had it happened there they would be sitting in a g jail by now because unlike here they will not tolerate it full stop and will take action fast.
The gruesome twosome may not get the welcome they think they will get and will be in for a nasty shock.

This is just yet another arrogant attempt to disregard the official investigation & make vast amounts of money for being lousy parents, this should not be allowed, & if at any time in the future they are convicted for any crime involving this case they should be forced to pay back every penny they've made out of this whole sorry affair!. ?Posted by: Hamsterman ?Report Comment YET ANOTHER EASY CASH COW FOR THE MCCANNS 26.01.08, 1:04am a small question we should all think about ... legally it is a crime to financially benifit from a crime, but they are innocent until proven guilty.... if they are found guilty what will happen???does anyone really care or is it money badly invested ? ?Posted by: ssdd ?Report Comment HAVE SOME DIGNITY 26.01.08, 12:21am Disgusting ?Posted by: pollyti ?Report Comment |

EVERY PARENT'S WORST NIGHTMARE By Mark Reynolds THE three-year-old daughter of two doctors is feared kidnapped today after disappearing during a family holiday in Portugal. Police are investigating whether little Madeleine McCann was snatched from their ground-floor holiday apartment while they dined out.
Kate McCann, a GP, and her husband, Gerry, a heart specialist, had left the toddler ?dressed only in white pyjamas ?sleeping with her two-year-old twin brother and sister.
As the parents ate in a tapas restaurant just yards away in Praia da Luz, western Algarve, on Thursday night, intruders are feared to have broken through shutters into the bedroom and abducted Maddy as she slept. The twins, Amelie and Sean, were not disturbed.
Specialist anti-kidnap officers from Britain’s Serious Organised Crime Agency were heading to the resort last night to help the Portuguese police.
Sniffer dogs scoured the area for any signs of the missing youngster. One dog, after smelling a piece of the child’s clothes, appeared to pick up the scent before it disappeared some 50 yards away outside a local supermarket. <FORM action=/posts/search/>The store’s CCTV was checked ?but it had not been working.
The McCanns, both 38, from Rothley village, near Leicester, were due to celebrate Maddy’s fourth birthday next week.
They issued an emotional statement, saying: “We have received lots of support from friends, family and the public and the family are very grateful for that support.
“At this time, all the family’s focus is in assisting the UK, and in particular the Portuguese, authorities in securing Madeleine’s safe return.?BR> The youngster’s aunt, Trish Cameron, of Dumbarton, near Glasgow, said: “The phone went last night and it was my brother Gerry, distraught on the phone, breaking his heart.
“He said, ‘Madeleine’s been abducted, she’s been abducted? They kept going back to check the kids every half-hour.?
On the last visit, at 10 pm, Mrs McCann went into the apartment, then ran out, screaming.
Mrs Cameron said: “The door was lying open, the window in the bedroom and the shutters had been jemmied open. Nothing had been touched in the apartment, no valuables taken, no passports. They think someone must have come in the window and gone out the door with her. It looks as if somebody has either been watching, or they’ve targeted her.?BR> Police were keeping an open mind about what happened. They were also investigating whether Maddy could simply have wandered off.
The apartment block in the Mark Warner complex is just 200 yards from the sea, and it was dark by the time the alarm was raised. But kidnapping remained the most likely explanation for the disappearance.
The McCanns had not employed a baby-minder, although the holiday company offers a free drop-in creche service or a paid-for private babysitter.
Dr McCann is a cardiologist at Leicester’s Glenfield Hospital. His wife is a popular family doctor in Melton Mowbray. A Portuguese police spokesman said: “They immediately raised the alarm and a search was begun, but so far there has been absolutely no sign of the girl. The fear is she has been abducted.?
Police sealed off the five-storey block and began taking fingerprints. Three police vans and three police cars were at the scene as four uniformed officers searched the family apartment. Forensic specialists fingerprinted the window sill of the McCanns?ground-floor apartment.
A patio at the back of the block, believed to be attached to the family’s room, was sealed off with tape.
As soon as the disappearance was discovered, hotel guests joined a frantic search of the grounds until 4.30am.
Resort hotel manager John Hill said: “It was a very emotional and very frantic night and everyone did a fantastic job of getting involved and trying to search the area. As you can imagine, Madeleine’s parents are distraught and not doing very well at all.?BR> A Mark Warner spokesman stressed that the resort offered a “dining out service?providing creche facilities for children aged four months to nine years.
“We are all hoping that the child is asleep under a bush somewhere, and that we will find her soon,?he said. He added that there was no physical evidence that the girl had been abducted. And he said Mark Warner had never had a child missing or abducted before.
Yesterday, Maddy’s grandparents, Brian and Susan Healy, from Mossley Hill, Liverpool, flew to join their daughter Kate. They said she felt the Portuguese authorities were not doing enough to find Maddy.
But Portuguese police said every possible theory was being investigated.
A close friend of the McCanns, Jill Renwick, said the parents were adamant their daughter had been abducted. “They were just watching the hotel room and going back every half-hour,?she said.
“They went out about eight, went back in at nine, they were fine, went back in at 10 ?and she was gone. They are very, very anxious parents and very careful and they chose Mark Warner because it is a family-friendly resort.?BR> Another friend, Pat Perkins, 61, said: “Gerry and Kate are fantastic parents and could see the bedroom from the hotel restaurant.
“Madeleine’s a beautiful little girl. It’s her fourth birthday soon. They were supposed to be flying home tomorrow to celebrate. We can’t believe what’s happening. We’re sat by the phone waiting to hear news. We’re all going through hell.?BR> Praia da Luz resident Mark McCarrick said the girl might have simply walked out of her room.
“The parents left the door ajar so they could keep going over and looking at her,?he said. “We are hoping that because the door was open, she just walked out.?BR> The resort, set in sub-tropical gardens, is made up of self-catering cottages and low-rise apartment blocks. Though a popular, quiet holiday haven for Britons, it has also attracted “unsavoury types? mainly burglars, who target holidaymakers.
Last night, the Foreign Office confirmed that the British anti-kidnap unit was in contact with the McCanns?local police force and a liaison officer based in Lisbon was in contact with Portugal’s police chief. </FORM> |

MADELEINE: DOES MUM’S DIARY HOLD VITAL CLUE? By Padraic Flanagan in Praia da Luz KATE McCann’s diary could hold the critical clue to her daughter’s disappearance, Portuguese police revealed yesterday. Detectives believe that desperate entries made by Madeleine’s mother will help unlock the secret of what happened to the four-year-old. </[> </[>
As well as Kate’s diary, police have also applied for a court order to seize Gerry McCann’s laptop. </[> </[> Investigators believe that emails sent from the cardiologist’s distinctive white computer will provide crucial evidence in the case against Madeleine’s parents. </[> </[>
But in a signal that the McCanns are prepared to fight to prove their innocence, they issued a challenge to Portuguese detectives yesterday, saying: “Find the body and prove we killed her.?nbsp; </[> They want the computer and lots of other objects including Kate’s diary | | </[> Portugal’s public prosecutor, Jose Cunha de Magalhaes e Meneses, has applied to a judge for an emergency order to seize several items ?including the laptop and diary ?within 24 hours. </[> </[>
It is believed the judge, Pedro Miguel dos Anjos Frias, approved the order last night. </[> </[> Papers are expected to be sent to the UK later today asking Leicestershire Police to seize the items so that Portuguese detectives can travel to England to examine them. </[> </[>
A police source said: “The police want to know what kind of emails Gerry exchanged with certain people. </[> </[>
“It seems to be more about Gerry than Kate, because they appear to believe Gerry controlled Kate. </[> </[>
“They want the computer and lots of other objects including Kate’s diary and letters from family and friends.?</[> </[>
However, he said police were not looking to seize Madeleine’s Cuddle Cat, as has been reported. Kate has regularly been seen clutching the toy since her daughter went missing on May 3. </[> </[>
Gerry’s laptop has been his constant companion since starting the campaign to publicise his daughter’s disappearance. He uses it to write a weblog detailing daily developments in the search. Kate, 39, has also regularly been seen writing in her black exercise book-type diary. </[> </[>
Sources close to the investigation say police believe both items will reveal Kate’s allegedly volatile state of mind in the days immediately after Madeleine’s disappearance 133 days ago. </[> Police are convinced the part-time GP was in some way linked to Madeleine’s accidental death and that she and Gerry, 39, then disposed of the body. </[> </[>
A mass of Madeleine’s hair and samples of bodily fluids have been found in the boot of the car that the couple hired 25 days after Madeleine disappeared. </[> </[> Now police believe their case can be strengthened further by examining emails and other documents on the laptop. </[> </[>
In particular, they are thought to be keen to see any email exchanges Gerry had with the friends he and Kate were dining with on the night Madeleine vanished. The couple both vehemently deny any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance. </[> </[>
They fear they are being framed by police and that evidence against them is being planted. If the prosecutor seeks to bring charges or impose stricter bail conditions on the McCanns, the judge has 10 days to decide whether to agree to the request. </[> </[>
It could, however, take weeks to go through the 4,000-page dossier of evidence against the couple. On Tuesday the prosecutor ordered the 10 huge police files on the case to go before the criminal instructional judge. </[> </[>
A friend of the McCanns said the family had been advised that the prosecutor was probably either seeking further guidance from the judge or seeking to carry out more searches. </[> </[>
Referring to the decision to pass files to the judge, the family friend said: “It’s hardly surprising for the prosecutor to want to push a hot potato upwards. “If you were in their shoes you would want to get those papers away as quickly as possible. </[> </[>
“Our understanding is there’s no filtering process whatsoever ?everything is in there. The judge has had the kitchen sink thrown at him.?nbsp; </[> </[>
The McCanns were declared “arguidos? or formal suspects, in the case during police questioning in Portimao last Friday. Under existing restrictions the couple are only required to give police their address and notify officers if they are away from home for more than five days. </[> </[>
This is why the McCanns were able to return home to Rothley on Sunday with their two-year-old twins, Sean and Amelie. Gerry’s sister, Philomena, said: “If they bring charges against Kate and Gerry, that will give them a chance to clear their name. It will give us a chance to end all this speculation.?/SPAN> |

MADELEINE: POLICE QUIZ PRIEST AGAIN By Nick Fagge in Praia da Luz DETECTIVES have carried out fresh searches at the church where Kate and Gerry McCann prayed for their missing daughter, it emerged yesterday. The Roman Catholic priest who offered comfort to the distraught parents and gave the couple their own set of keys to the chapel has also been reinterviewed by investigators.
Portuguese police carried out a detailed search at Our Lady Of Light church in Praia da Luz and the surrounding area, including the old cemetery.
The operation was carried out “informally and with maximum discretion?by agents from the Policia Judiciaria as they followed up leads into possible hiding places for Madeleine’s body.
Officers “spent the day?with Father Jose Manuel Pacheco, questioning him for several hours and also visiting him at home.
Detectives want to understand the precise nature of the relationship between the McCanns and Father Jose and what involvement the 16th century church itself played during the five months the couple were in the Algarve. <FORM action=/posts/search/> The priest became a close friend and confidante of the McCanns after Madeleine’s disappearance on May 3. The couple, who are devoted Catholics, attended Mass most Sundays and also participated in several candle-lit vigils at the tiny church. </FORM>
Father Jose even gave the couple, from Rothley, Leics, their own set of keys so they could pray in private whenever they wished.
He has since been reprimanded by the church authorities for allowing himself to get so close to the couple.
The Bishop of the Algarve, Dom Manuel Quintas, was particularly critical of his decision to give church keys to the McCanns.
Father Jose has previously said he felt “deceived?in connection with the investigation but has never clarified what he meant by this statement.
A friend of Father Jose yesterday said the priest had changed since the Madeleine affair, which had deeply affected him. He has moved out of the clerical house he used to share with other priests in the parish and now lives with his elderly parents.
He has also almost completely stopped going out. The friend said: “Whenever anybody talks about Madeleine he steers the talk on to other subjects. He has stopped going to all the places he used to go, especially the coffee shops.
“There are two completely different Pachecos, the one before the McCanns and the one after.?/P>
The latest searches took place two weeks ago on the orders of Paulo Rebelo, Portugal’s second most senior policeman, who took over the investigation last month.
He has re-examined the entire case and even ordered a re-enactment of the night Madeleine went missing from the family’s holiday apartment.
Detectives visited Father Jose at his parents?home in Odiaxere, about 10 miles from Praia da Luz and close to the Barragem da Bravura lake which detectives searched last month for the body of the missing four-year-old girl.
Officers then followed the priest to the church in a separate car in order to be discreet and avoid unwanted attention.
Last night it was unclear whether Father Jose had been asked to make a formal statement as a witness in the case or if officers had searched his home.
It is possible they asked him if he had ever taken confession from either of the McCanns, although Father Jose has previously said he would never reveal anything he had been told during confession.
Police sources have said in the past that they believe Madeleine to be dead and “either on the bottom of the ocean or in the church? Some officers believe that the toddler died after an accident in the holiday apartment and that her body was disposed of more than three weeks later.
It has been suggested the body was hidden in the church or its grounds and then taken away in the boot of the McCanns?Renault Scenic hire car.
However, after more than 200 days since Madeleine’s disappearance, Portuguese police insist that all avenues of inquiry remain open. |

FIND THE BODY AND PROVE WE KILLED HER Thursday September 13,2007 By Padraic Flanagan in Praia da Luz THE parents of missing Madeleine McCann yesterday challenged the police: ?B>Find the body and prove we killed her.? The couple, who are suspected over the child’s death and the disposal of her body, issued the startling ultimatum as the public prosecutor in Portugal sent the police case against them to a judge. It is thought that the McCanns?high-powered lawyers have told them that without a body it will be extremely difficult for the authorities to press charges. A close friend said: “The legitimate question to ask Portuguese police is: ‘Where is the body? Where is the evidence that Madeleine is dead? We have got no idea??nbsp;
The change in the family’s tone ?just days after the McCanns were still pleading for the search for Madeleine to continue ?surprised sources close to the investigation. “It seems remarkable that just days after the McCanns were saying they thought Madeleine was still alive and missing, now they’re talking about a body,?a source said. “I don’t know if this is really the McCanns speaking or just one of the people working on their publicity campaign but it is not the kind of comment to impress a team of detectives who think you’re guilty.?nbsp;</FORM>
The case against the McCanns detailed in the dossier of evidence now before Judge Pedro Miguel dos Anjos Frias appears to rest mainly on potentially damaging forensic test results. These are said to include Madeleine’s DNA in traces of bodily fluid, as well as a mass of hair, discovered in the McCanns?hire car which was rented 25 days after she went missing on May 3. Portugal’s attorney general Fernando Jose Pinto Monteiro has indicated the police investigation into Kate and Gerry, both 39-year-old doctors, has not ended and suggested stricter bail conditions could be imposed on the couple. Public prosecutor Jose Cunha de Magalhaes e Meneses, based at Portimao on the Algarve, on Tuesday ordered the 10 lever-arch police files in the case to go before the judge. Mr Jose Pinto Monteiro announced last night that he was appointing a second public prosecutor to the case. Luis Bilro Verao, from the Evora district in central Portugal, will oversee the work of Portimao-based Mr Cunha de Magalhaes e Meneses. A friend of the McCanns said the family had been advised that the prosecutor was probably either seeking further guidance from the judge or applying for the authority to carry out more searches. The friend said the McCanns?new legal team, based in London, was working around the clock to “get up to speed on the case? The McCanns?Portuguese lawyer, Carlos Pinto de Abreu, yesterday hit out at Portugal’s justice system in a scathing interview with a local newspaper. “It is more appropriate to break down the patience of a believer and the reputation of an innocent man than to identify those responsible,?he said. A family friend said the speculation appeared to be taking its toll on the McCanns, who left Praia da Luz to return to their family home in Leicestershire at the weekend. The source said: “Two days ago Gerry was telling everyone: ‘I’m as strong as an ox? Yesterday he was not quite as ebullient. They fear they will be summoned back at some stage. They are innocent; they did not kill Madeleine and dispose of her body.?It was expected that fresh searches would be ordered in Praia da Luz. Policia Judiciaria spokesman Olegario Sousa refused to confirm or deny the sites, but there was no sign of searches at the church yesterday. Gerry’s brother John McCann said: “There is so much speculation going on as to what the actual information the Portuguese police have. If they have got something that suggests Madeleine really is dead then for goodness sake tell the family who have the strongest feeling for this.?/SPAN> |
