In Portugal there's 3 police forces, the PJ, PSP, and GNR.
PJ: is the main police branch of criminal investigation in Portugal, dedicated to fighting criminality, organized crime, terrorism, drugs, corruption and financial crimes. It is a highly specialized and technically autonomous force, at both technical and scientific levels.
PSP: (Public Security Police) is police force that works in the urban areas. They have a department called GOE (Special Operations Group) similar to the British SAS with whom they trains and have a strong relationship. They also train with many other international similar forces.
GNR: is a military body charged with police duties (also known as a para-military force) among civilian populations (gendarmery). Responsible for providing honor guards in public buildings and ceremonies, patrolling and enforcing the law in the countryside and small towns, and providing a national highway patrol and fiscal guard. The GNR aren't officers but soldiers.
Most people seem to confuse the PJ with the GNR. Many think that the uniformed men that they see in the media are from PJ when in fact are from the GNR. The PJ agents, officers or inspectors do not ware uniform, usually you can't distinguish them and they don't drive police or military like cars.
The Police force called when there's an incident, is the GNR in the rural areas and PSP in urban areas. When Madeleine disappeared, 40minutes latter the GNR was called. On this kind of situations they do the basics like checking if the children didn't walk away or is with relatives, playing with friends etc,and start wih searches. If they they see that are facing a crime scene, they escalate it to the PJ as it happened in this case after a few searches and around 1am the PJ arrived. The PJ have the authonomy to request the assistance of the GNR or PSP for some jobs.
- The mentioned 2 police officers whom swear that Murat was not in the resort that night were in fact 2 GNR soldiers.
- The Police officers that said to the press in the beginning of November that when they arrived at the apartment it was a chaos with more then 10 people in a turmoil there, and that they failed sealing the apartment which was a mistake but the mess was already done. They were in fact GNR soldiers. However i discredit the supposed interview made by a British newspaper to both GNR soldiers because they would know that they would be infringing the law and be arrested.
-The Police officers responsible for carrying the searches around PDL whom have been pointed as not searching accurately in the garbage bins and tunnels, were not in fact PJ inspectors. For me that was another media fabrication to discredit the PJ. 150 GNR soldiers, plus Maritime Police, PSP, firefighters and the national civil protection service, bloodhounds, helicopters and even boats, the searches were made in a radius of 3km around PDL in the first 24hours. extended to 5km and more latter... So... i dont believe they missed the tunnels and garbage bins. |
