Looking at the case from a purely objective point of view and without assumptions on guilt or innocence
1. The McCanns
WON: lots of money, holidays in the Algarve for the whole family, mortgage installments paid (and I strongly suspect the whole outstanding mortgage), new 4x4, celebrity status much enjoyed by them and the families
LOST: a little daughter (the thing that is now missing) but that doesn't seem to have stopped them from enjoying the good things in life bless them and, besides, they still have the twins.
2. The British media
WON: lots of money
LOST: nothing, the way the whole thing was handled was a disgrace but that doesn't seem to bother them.
3. Mitchell
WON: lots of money
LOST: nothing.
4. Murat
WON: a considerable amount of money
LOST: was hounded, vilified and insulted by the media, especially British to be honest.
Lost his livelihood (the estate agents business) although I don't know how well it was doing anyway.
5. Amaral
WON: nothing
LOST: a job he was dedicated to. Again was hounded, vilified, insulted and slandered by the British media.
6. Portugal
WON: nothing
LOST: again it was vilified, insulted and ridiculed with utter contempt by the British media.
Paid an enormous bill as yet undisclosed!
7. Maddie
WON: nothing
Lost: her life (IMHO)
Interesting how the interests of the McCanns and Maddie seem to be on opposite ends!
