1. Even though it is very unlikely that Madeleine is still in Portugal, her parents have decided to stay/live there for an indefinite period. They have now moved into a private villa.

2. They presumably want to reimburse the travel and accommodation expenses of her mother and sister and their parish priest, who they flew out and are still in Portugal after 2 weeks. Various of his relatives have flown back and forth and stayed for free at the Mark Warner resort, but the bill has probably run into tens of thousands of pounds for food and lodging for all these people.

3. They have hired a team of £300/hour lawyers plus a £500/hour barrister, flew them out, put them up in a hotel. To my knowledge, they are still there.

4. They have hired a PR consultant and flew her out and are paying for her accommodation.

5. They are still leaving their other two in the Mark Warner creche during the day, so now have to pay for that.

6. Finally, they're CONSIDERING hiring a PI. When my sister's children were abducted, that's the first thing she did. And she did it on her own money (partly borrowed from our parents, rest paid for by a second job she had to take on).

The McCanns should be paying for all this themselves.

Note to Laurabe: the word "volunteer" means "for no pay".

Note to Smiley: Since Madeleine McCann disappeared, 450 (you read it right) children under the age of 15 have gone missing in the UK alone.

Note to Eden: Excellent point. They call this a "fighting fund", and for good reason. Firstly, everybody look up what a barrister does. They don't look for missing children or set up limited companies - their sole purpose is to defend people accused of crimes. The "fighting" the McCanns are doing, that only canny people (a lot of them on these boards) is fighting extradition to the UK on child abandonment charges (the reason they have made the decision to remain in Portugal), and fighting similar charges which must inevitably be brought against them in Portugal. The PLC was set up for tax avoidance reasons. As a former UK Company Secretary, I know of what I speak! When you give money to the McCanns, you effectively become shareholders in their company, but in UK law, the directors (who in this case are Gerry and Kate McCann and two of their immediate family members) do not have to account to the shareholders in any way, shape or form, and being a corporation instead of a private individual, is only subject to income tax at 23% (as opposed to 40%).

Wise up, people! When you send your hard-earned money to any Maddy website or fund, your money is NOT going towards finding Maddy. And bear in mind also that you and I, with our taxes, are already paying for teams of British police, investigators and Foreign Office translators to be in Portugal, despite the fact that Europol and Interpol have been involved from the get-go. We don't have a say in how our taxes are spent, but we do have a say in where we funnel our private donations, which, unless we are in the McCanns' income bracket, are not tax-deductible!

Note to Cooltyger: Wealthy, private individuals already put up over $5 million in reward money, just for information as to her whereabouts, and nobody took the bait. The "fighting fund" is NOT reward money.

Asker's Comment:
I am gutted that i donated £120, I feel as if I have been cheated. I am not well off, we used the money we saved to take our little girl away to the lake district for the weekend. but I thought my money would help more than us going away for the weekend.

Is this what you are searching for?

i am confused, is this the money that simon cowell and the like have givin or is the money they want from the public,so much has been said on this subject, it seems to have over shadowed the very real fact that little maddie is still missing,i 4 one will not be giving anything to this "so called fund",what to line the pockets of two very selfish parents, who in actual fact caused this to happen, instead of jogging or whatever they are still doing in portugal, they should be in there hired car searching high and low for there little girl, not thinking bout money and financial gain at this present moment.

I have no problem handing over my money to "good causes" but in this case i can only imagine the money would be spent on the MC canns staying in Portugal. If i was in their shoes i wouldn't leave Portugal until my child was found either, but there is no way i would fund it. Lets face it their both doctors who can afford a nanny. I don't want to sound cold hearted but their not short of a few quid.

what does it relay matter its not your money why do you want it because i dont and i wouldnt want to be in there shoes rite at this moment not knowing if there daughter is alive or dead and no one is saying that you have to give so what the hell is it to you i expect it is to pay for them staying over there to find there daughter so why don't you just leave the family alone they now what they have done was wrong and i for one think that they should be punished for child neglect because in the eyes of the law that is what it was but rite at this moment i don't care where the money goes as long as they find that little girl Ive given and i hope it will help them to stay there until they find her so if you ain't giving with a good heart then don't bother

It's a pity that they weren't as careful about their children as they obviously care about money.

The family claim that it will finance their stay in Portugal, however long that may be, and enable them to pay people to keep the campaign to find Madeleine going. They also claim that any money left over will go to charity.

Like all money raised for "good causes," however, this fund is open to abuse. I would hope that Madeleine's family will not use this fund to get richer (they already own the holiday apartment that Madeleine was abducted from, these people are not poor!)

my concern has always been, if the McCann's do eventually face legal proceedings caused by the neglect and abandonment of their children, you all do realise they can use this money to pay for their legal representation?

The money is to be used for the parents expenses, etc. It is disgusting. It is very true what people say the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. It is not a charity that has been set up but a Limited Company. So that means the money can be spent on all the McCann family and friends. It is beggars belief that this has been allowed to happen. I would rather send my donation to the NSPCC, BBC Children in Need or the Red Cross.

The McCanns clearly saw a public desire to 'help' in any way they could, and the only way the public could really help was to offer money so that the McCanns could stay in Portugal indefinitely.

This fund has been set up to syphon off the money of well-meaning but ultimately foolish members of the public. There are bigger tragedies going on every day in the UK and all over the world. If people really have such a sense of conscience, they should be donating to real causes, not to cover the accommodation and legal expenses of an already rich couple who treat their own children like commodities.

This money pays for accommodation, creche bills, food and drink, legal expenses, and pointless yellow ribbons and t shirts. And to top it off, this fund is not even set up as a charity, so when all this is over, where does the money go? It goes to the family as 'compensation' for their suffering, after a situation which only arose in the first place because they didn't want the burden of children to spoil their lovely holiday.

It's is to fund the McCanns retirement pension no doubt!!

Why the frick did they have to set up a limited company [why not a charity for other missing children]...???

By setting up a limited company they have come across as mercenary [profiting from their daughter's disappearance] and I suspect that if their daughter is ever found they will write a book for a very large fee of course, in addition to being interviewed for several tabloid newspapers for 6 figure sums!!

I'm shocked to hear that the fund is a limited company and not a charity. They must have some good business links, or a publicist, or someone on board who can just go and set up a business whilst they are abroad and searching for their daughter...

Combined they would earn a helluva lot more than most people, and could afford to stay a lot longer in Portugal than most families. I think the police should be allowed to get on with their investigation; I don't see how the public donating money to their private funds actually helps in the task of finding Madeline.

I thought it was for keeping her parents in Portugal (as they are very poor and have very underpaid jobs as doctors, Im surprised they could have been able to afford to go to Portugal on holiday in the first place) And to pay for private detectives and things and if they find Madeleine the money is supposed to go to people who find themselves in the same situation.
Every year a child goes missing and we dont have all this international media coverage, how have they got it?

The fund is a limited company NOT a charity so therefore is not subject to the same checks and balances.

Remember that all money that goes into the fund becomes the property of the McCanns.

They can spend it on hotel accomodation, flying friends over 'for support; whatever they want.

I think its disgraceful that there will be no checks or balances as to how they spend the money. They can even use the money to compensate themselves for 'loss of earnings' while out at Portugal.

If you have a heart, do NOT give money to this fund but instead give it to the Red Cross which is subject to independent audits and you can be sure where your money is going.
