What is a normal running Temp for '66 Patrol? I just replaced thermostat w/180. Temp. gauge is reading just below 212. It seems a bit high to me. |

The temperature rating of a thermostat means the temperature at which the thermostat begins to open, not at which the engine will run. The stock temperature gauge in my '65 Patrol also seems to read high, just under 212, yet I can still stick my finger in the radiator without getting scalded. Electric gauges, especially in other vehicles, are noted for not being accurate, but they're usually consistent. You could try the finger test to see if your truck is actually running too hot or if the gauge is just reading high. You could also check it by hooking up a mechanical temperature gauge or using a thermometer. |

Sorry, I meant older vehicles, not "other" vehicles! |

Thanks for the info. I thought it was OK but wanted reassurance. |

I'd check it with a meat thermometer or one of those hand held laser temp. guns. Water boils around 212 depending on your elevation. In my opinion 190 would be pushing too hot. If the thermostat is 180 then it should stay close to that temp if your cooling system isn't plugged up. If you can stick your finger in it then it's not 200+- |

Thanks to all. I learned a couple of things. Using a digital meat thermometer , my temp was reading a steady 184. One other thing I learned, using a meat thermometer for checking temp on your Patrol =angry girlfriend. A man's got to have his priorities though. |

Yeah Danette gets a little ticked when I use the turkey baster to to put in gear oil or suck out brake fluid. I guess it makes a turkey taste funny. |
