If you place CYL 1 at TDC, the following valves (from front to back) can be adjusted without turning the engine:
1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9

With CYL 6 at TDC:
4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12

Gap is .15 - .16 - intake and exhaust. Desert or snow country doesn't make a difference.

BACK TO TDC  FOR CYL 2&4 MAKING SURE VALVES , IN & EXH  WERE FULLY CLOSED
PRIOR TO ADJUSTING.  A OLD FRIEND SAID THIS WOULD WORK ,DOES IT SOUND RIGHT

I'm not sure that your method fits falls in with the method above. I personally always recheck them after I drive it a bit. I can usually tell if I messed one up by a miss or ticking sounds.
