A comman thing on alot of Patrols is collapsed leaf springs, I have three Patrols with this problem. When loaded correctly the clearance between your axel and the bump stop should be 1.81" if it is less your springs are in bad shape. On one of my Patrols this measurement is less than 1/2" so the springs are shot. When restoring the suspension on your Patrol you have a few choices....

First, you can get the Ironman 2.5" lift kit, I hear this is a great kit but will not be stock in look or ride. The kit runs $1100....it is fairly complete.

Second, Richard at Motorcare can get an aftermarket spring that is a copy of the stock leafs, he can get them in both standard and HD formats. This is a good choice if you are looking to keep it stock, springs run about $225-250 each USA dollars plus shipping. You will have to have these shipped by boat though unless you want to pay huge shipping costs, shipping by boat will still be expensive.

Third, you can get stock springs from Nissan but currently not from Nissan of America. The stock springs are available just not in the USA...cost is over $300 a spring but this is the best choice when going for an all original resto. Hopefully soon these will be available in standard and HD form direct from Nissan via Japan.

Fourth, several other companies in Australia sell aftremarket leaf springs, all are lift kits ranging from 2"-4" lift. You will have to dig to find them but they are out there....I am unsure of cost but would expect them to be around the same cost as the Ironman.

Lastly, bushings, shocks and the rest of your suspension can be rebuilt using used parts (bad if full resto) or just match them up with things for other vehicles. Some things are still available from Nissan but in limited quanities such as shock bushings and some are not like rebound stopper rubber.

Hope this helps some of you trying to resto the suspension on your Patrol....like I said flat leafs are pretty comman on our old Patrols.

there are spring shops that will re-arc springs and re-heat treat them for a whole lot less.

I have also found no place that will fix leaf springs, maybe due to the fact I live in Wyoming. This lack of and my need of is the reason I have tracked down leafs.....One thing is for sure parts for Patrols are expensive, they were ten years ago and still are today. I will be purchasing some diffrent sets soon, already have an Ironman on the way, when I get these leafs I will report on what I think of them....

<PRE>the hunting and fishing in wyoming is great. but you are limited when it
comes to automotive services. but after a minute of thought i guess the
hunting and fishing out weigh the other. mark.

<PRE>after some research i may have spoke too soon about the re-arc situation
there are numerous places that will re-arc (Santee, San Diego, etc.) but most
are cold arced not done the correct way of annealing (heating bending re-heat
treating). after talking to several shops about this i found out, that you
have to start with a pretty good spring in the first place. or the process
won't work or last. most places want to re-arc and also add a leaf. price
wise you will be over $300 i found a place that will make new leafs here in
the states with (american) spring steel (the good stuff) for around $360 so
it appears that new is the way to go. mark.

Hey Mark,

ya the outdoors is great here...I am from Oregon and Wyoming is so much more wild! We got so many elk the governement is going to start giving them birth control so they stop breeding so much! I know a guy that got a moose the other day hunting, talk about a freezer full of meat! You are correct about no good auto services here, and expensive too. Yet it is all worth it....I would share my favorite fishing spots but then they wouldn't be a secret ;)

Glad you gave us a bit more info on the springs...I was hoping I wasn't wasting my time getting leafs from far away places. My 66 needs to be stock so I went for stock Nissan springs on it, my 64 is a custom build so I went Ironman on it and I have plans to put the "H" HD leafs on another Patrol. Leafs were fairly easy to find but alot of the other suspension parts are not....sway bar stuff, rebound stoppers and the large rubber bump stops are proving to be the hardest to get my hands on.
