Hey M.G.
What are your thoughts on the .41 magnum round? I'm in the mood for another pistol, and I want my collection to be diverse. I've shot the .44mag, and it has too much 'bark' for this old guy. I've heard that the 41 packs more punch that a 357, and the recoil isn't to bad. I don't hunt, so the actual 'kill' power isn't a factor, just targets and stuff.

Part 2 of my question is; What are your thoughts on the actual gun? I have been eyeballing the Ruger single action.

Thanks again..

BGS/ Bruce

There are various revolvers around chambered for the .41 Mag: S&W, Dan Wesson, and Ruger.  Your choice is pretty much taste and with what kinds of loads you intend to shoot in the pistol.  Of the three listed, the Ruger is, by far, the strongest in design and able to stand all sorts of experimentation with various handloads.  Some shooters say that the single action Ruger's grip is much superior to that of the double action S&W and Dan Wessons.  They say the grip allows the gun to roll upwards in recoil and helps damp out the shock of powerful handloads.  This may or may not be useful to you if you don't handload to maximum pressures and velocities.

It really comes down to a choice between the single action or double action revolver.  The single action is rugged as a box of rocks but slow to reload.  The double action offers two kinds of trigger action and a swing-out cylinder.  Which do you like?  After that, it comes to barrel length and whether you want to go with the adjustable iron sights or put some kind of scope on the piece.
