'Nonie' has a 28" barrel and I just use her at the range for target shooting, but so many people have commented on using shotguns for home defense. What is your thoughts on having 'Nonie's' 28" barrel cut down to 18.5" or should I wait until I can afford a separate short barrel? |

Cat-Dude, As far as I can see, you shoot Nonie a lot, and have fun with her, why change it? A 12ga shotgun with 4 shot express loads is a wonderful deterrant, and will blow out nice dinner plate holes. In a apartment/house, a shotgun letting off a shell is extremely loud, even if you only maim, you're bound to scare the bejesus out of any bad guy. I'd say wait it out. Take a look at the Taurus Judge. It's a handgun that shoots .410 OR .45 longs .. nice and short, easy to carry, makes nice big holes, and 5 shots. |

Keep the standard 28-inch barrel and buy the 18.5-inch barrel. |

I just called my local gun shop and they have the 18.5" barrel for the Mossberg 500 series. My understanding is the 500 and the Maverick 88 are inter-changeable. Is this gospel? The 500's barrel goes for $75. |

It's my understanding that the Maverick is actually a Mossberg with a different name. The best way to find out is to take your shotgun to the dealer's and try the short barrel for fit. You'll know very quickly if they interchange. Also, you could go to the the Mossberg website and ask them. |
