Would you ever consider using a Taurus 'The Judge' .410/.45 for a hunting piece or are you strictly a rifle/shotgun type?

Never thought of it, but if I hunted, I reckon it'd be OK for small to medium size game.

For those not familiar, the Taurus (Brazilian Co.) "Judge" is a five shot .410/.45 Long Colt revolver that's marketed for self-defense purposes.  As a anti-snake gun, it is good.  For other types of hunting, it is marginal.

I did a search on "Taurus Judge pistol" and brought up a website called the "Box O' Truth" that had a range report with photos.  One of the things that the author found was the Judge is chambered for 2-1/2 inch .410 shells.  All the author could only find in 00 buckshot were 3-inch shells and these had to be cutdown to fit for testing.  You can go to the site and see the results, but here's the short form from the tests:

Lessons learned:

1. The owner bought this pistol for snakes and it looks like a fine tool for that job.

2. Birdshot, in any gauge, is for little birds.

3. Buckshot out of a .410 does not penetrate enough to be an effective personal defense load.

4. The rifled slug was also a disappointment and did not have enough weight or power or penetration to be effective as a defense load.

5. The .45 Long Colt loads had plenty of penetration and would be the preferred defense load for this pistol.

6. It's fun to bust clays with this pistol.

I am a rifle/shotgun person and only use a pistol for target practice.

If I still hunted it would be with a rifle or shotgun.

I would say it would depend on the size of whatever you're hunting.
