Brown Eyes
He looked one last time
Into those liquid brown eyes
As always they spoke volumes
Thank you for this
And all the other good times
The noble head slowly lay down
On the steel table
The eyes dimmed and closed
He recalled a tan bundle
Worn from boundless energy
Climb to his lap in exhaustion
Pink tongue searching
For a final lick
The head slowly fall down
In his lap
He recalled many a day
In the bush with his boys
The tan bundle growing
Adding to his responsibilities
Seeing the safe return of his charges
Worn out and content
His head falling to rest
Across his right foot
He recalled those days
When there seemed nothing to do
And a tan head with searching brown eyes
Would find it’s way
Under his hand
Now is a good time for a scratch
And the both of us
Would fall asleep tangled
Brown and green eyes close
He recalled that day
Not so long ago
The slow painful walk to his side
Those brown eyes asking
For help with this strange new feeling
The body stiff and slow
Under his hand
As the brown eyes
Took comfort in his touch
One day he came home
And there was no greeting
In front of his chair not moving
Lay the bundle of tan fur
A noble head barely raised
Gave him welcome home
Liquid brown eyes asked
For one more kindness
And one more scratch
