I read an article that said a PRC -25 didn't have any scrambeling capabilities in the Vietnam War. But somewhere in my abused gray matter poped up the KY - 8 unit that I thought was used with the PRC-25 for voice scrambling. I never used one in my tour but it was covered in FROC school. I was around the KW-7 scrambler for TTY comm in the 15 van's tho but that was a whole different system. Anybody got any info on the KY-8? SF, Dick |

Dawg, OK, what's a PRC -77? Could it be back-packed? I think in FROC school we had a demonstration of the KY - 8 and it looked about the same size as the PRC-25 and clamped on or strapped on to a PRC - 25. I recall when activated, all another non scrambled radio would hear is a hiss like after our computer connects to the server. I can't recall if it used a sub-carrier freq or had a rolling freq system much like our garage door openers use today. Daily shackle sheet settings had to be used for all the people on that net. Oh well, just curious as to why that article in the Vietnam mag missed that. Probably the KY - 8 was for a lot higher secracy use than I was ever around. SF, Dick |

Guys, Thanks for the info and link. I browsed wiki some more and found the KY-57 looked similar to the old KY-8 we used in FROC school. It also had a battery package and made it more or less a two man hump to set up in a CP somewhere. I don't think it was "available" to most tactical units for portable use like the article said, and most likely better in a jeep etc.. Or the spook types may had humped it. SF, Dick PS. Hey, we made it to 2009!! Quite an accomplishment for us Aye? |
