CMS...Watch for it.
With all the medical issues facing us each day, it appears that research has shown that a new and insidious disease has been descovered. This disease affects men and women of all ages. It is called CMS (Chronic Marine Syndrom).  There is no cure for CMS, and the VA has not recognized it as of this writing, but there have been a few treatments that have been successful.

Symptoms to look for are:
1. Pride in self and the organization they represent.
2. A strong willingness to pay extra attention to detail to get the job done.
3. May wear articles of Marine clothing: T-shirts, jackets, watches, etc, well into their 80's.
4. Will stand at attention and put their hands over their hearts, or even salute when the National Anthem is played or the National Colors are passing by.
5. Does not easily succumb to political correctness.
6. Is sure of who they are.
7. Is often either respected or hated by others due to their abilities and talents.
8. Will give up their seat to a lady.
9. Some have been known to wear their hair "high and tight" into their 90's.
10. Will look you in the eye when talking to you.
11. Will give you a firm handshake.
12. Knows what HONOR, COURAGE, and COMMITMENT mean.
13. Can usually be found in a position of leadership in whatever organization they work.
14. Will often regard their Drill Insructors with the same respect as their parents.
15. Often found in law enforcement or other professions.
16. Is extremely thorough in what they do.
17. Does not wear a bunch of patches to adorn their uniform; their title of MARINE is usually sufficient.
18. Often arrives at work ealier than expected.
19. Usually spent part of their youth at one of three places: Parris Island, San Diego, or Quantico.
20. May be able to field strip a rifle up to 60 years after leaving active duty.
21. Can recite the nomenclature of the M-16, M-14, M-1, or 1911-A1 as appropriate.
22. You will often hear them say such phrases as "Once a Marine, always a Marine", "OORAH", or "Semper Fi" to apparent strangers on the street.

Possible treatments include:
1. Frequent visits to bases where they served or looking at their Marine memorabilia.
2. Get them around other Marines to help them flourish. They need other Marines because they have shared experiences.
3. Have them get memberships in organizations such as The Marine Corps League, the Division or Air Wing Associations, or other Marine related organizations.
4. Some may require extra attention such as watching Marine movies. this is only natural and nothing to worry about.

Whatever you do, remember that Chronic Marine Syndrom must be managed carefully.  A 70 year old Marine shot two robbers when they tried to hold him up after robbing the Subway in which he was eating. As the Marine stated they disturbed his dinner. In another case involving a Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict, a young man who tried to mug him was severely beaten.

Do you best to spread the word about CMS to others who may be afflicted.

If you earned it, wear it.

Sparky,

I know another treatment for CMS was helpful for the ladies haning around Marines with the symptomDSB, (Dreaded Sperm Buildup).  Not a cure but helpful.

Sparky,

Forgot to ask,  are the fires in CA threatening your digs?  For awhile I thought all the smoke here the last couple days was from them but found out it was from some Canadian fires blowing it south. Lots of lightening storms blowing through here in the evenings but no major flare ups so far.  Not good for California this early in the fire season to have such a mess.

Dick and Sparky,

Another symptom of CMS is having an 18 year-old mind in a much, much older body and thinking that you can do what you could do at 18 when you're 62.

We might have some serious fires on the East Coast, too.  I went to Pennsylvania the other day and bought fireworks of the sort they will not sell to PA residents.  You have to present an out-of-state ID to get them.  I figure the Commonwealth does not want to overburden their fire/rescue, hospital ER, or prison resources.  I think one of the wounded Marines I'm expecting today is an EOD guy and I'm going to tell the rest of my guests that if they see him running, they'd better run, too.

Mikey,

I forgot about the Opps fires on the 4th.  I had a couple last year while the kids were here.  had the bright idea of setting them on an old wire reel, about 3 feet high, but the multiple mortar shots tipped over and had every body dodging hot stuff, then me in the weeds with the fire extinguisher...hey, a lil adventure at grandpa's...what'd they expect? This year it's me and Cory on the front deck watching the neighborhood fireworks go off this eve. Can see the town rodeo fireworks from here too. Now Mikey's crew should have an EOD guy overseeing their fireworks...as if they'd listen to him.

Good Morning Boys,
Yea, we had fires all around us...2 to the East of and 1 to the South. The real problem was that they were just allowed to burn for almost a week before crews could be released from other fires. Mendocino county alone had 172 fires going from lightning strikes...We're about 40% contained as of last night. Also our water levels are way down. And this is only the begining of July...Fire season is more than a month early.
Needless to say the fireworks show at Benbow lake has been cancelled. Whew!
I still see the fireworks stands doing a brisk business though, and I can't believe that they don't get it. California's fire resorces are spread soooo thin right now we're really in trouble. The Governator should ban ALL fireworks in the state. Of course I would feel this way...The 4th of July is always the busiest day of the year for firefighters.

I plan to spend a quiet day at home, working around the homestead. Then I'll BBQ and hoist a few in honor of all those who sacrificed, and continue to sacrifice, so much in order to guarantee our way of life in this great country.

Semper Fi Brothers, and have a Happy 4th of July
Sparky

Sparky,

Glad the fires missed you and hope it stays that way. I believe some MT fire fighters are in CA somehwere, probably the Indian crews as we haven't had some bad ones yet.

We watched the fireworks all up and down the Missouri last night, most town shows were a little shy this year as the donations were a lot thinner than before, blamed on fuel prices and economy.  But, the private shows were pretty good.  The back drop of major lightening far away kind of enhanced the night sky.  It had rained hard around 7pm so that kept the grass fires away. The last few evenings noisey storms have been rolling in from the west, so WA and OR must be getting slammed.  The grass on the mountain sides is still green here, but expect it to dry out in a couple weeks, then our fire fighters will be busy too. If all this stuff moves east, I'm thinking the mid and eastern people are in for more nastey stuff this summer.

I just marched in the 4th of July parade in Hixton Wisconsin just like I do every year.

Our little town was really packed with people this year.

All the people along the parade route did something strange this year.

As I carried the American flag down the parade route (everybody along the route)  Stood, and put their hand over their heart as the
colors passed them.  All the kids, People with hats took them off.  Not one person along the route just stood there, or stayed seated
in their chair.

It was great

Happy 4th late.
