Gents, Ahhh.... 233 and still going strong! Vicki and I attended the Wounded Warriors Ball in Bethesda last night and had a grand time with the wounded Marines and their families. The Thane was resplendent in his kilt and doublet and the Thaness radiant: The Wounded Warriors had a grand time and I have no doubt that some of them are feeling worse this morning than when they were hit. Happy Birthday, friends! If any of you are in the DC/Baltimore area this weekend, our MCL detachment is having a luncheon on Sunday for vets and their families at the Ellicott Mills Brewing Company in Ellicott City from 1300-1600. Vets eat free and bring your whole family and feed them for 10 bucks a head. I'll be hosting the cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the birthday and having a pint or two or seventeen of the brewed-on-the-premises Semper Fi Strong Ale. C'mon out! Mikey, Thane of Duninsane |

Dick, Not to worry. Have you read Commandant Conway's birthday message? It quotes "Brute" Krulak's "... the United States does not need a Marine Corps ... the United States wants a Marine Corps." If we stick together as we always have, any Fool on the Hill (or in the White House) who advocates the abolition or absorption of the Corps will be committing political suicide. Remember what Harry Truman said when the Corps faced disbanding after WWII? "The Marines have a better propaganda machine than Joe Stalin's." A veritable barrage of disapproval from Marines made Truman make a mighty fast retreat. There will be a United States Marine Corps for as long as there is a United States of America. We and our descendants in the Corps will see to that. "Semper Fidelis" isn't just a motto; it's a way of life which is in our soul and our very bones. Mikey, Thane of Duninsane |

Ice, You apparently have me confused with Big Dawg, whose first job in the Corps was shaping musket flints. Mikey, Thane of Duninsane |

The first gathering I attended 23 years ago in Farmville Va. had Marines from an old China Hand to a couple just out of Boot. We have dwindled a bit since, but word is there is an Iraq Vet in Longwood University organizing present war veterans. He has been contacted and perhaps our demographic will change from geriactric to able bodied... (we need 'em to help us to our cars). Green |

The Marine Corps is older than the United States, what does that tell you? Rat |

Rat, After 3 hours of standing on the sidewalk outside a Toys 'R' Us doing Toys for Tots yesterday morning and then officiating at our luncheon and cake-cutting, I feeling older than the dirt in the United States. I'm sure the 8 pints of Semper Fi Strong Ale I drank yesterday had nothing to do with that, of course. None the less, I'm up and scratching this morning and getting ready to head to the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington for the birthday celebration and wreath-laying there. Then it's back to Duninsane for another birthday celebration - that of the first birthday anniversary of Caitlin Semper Fidelis MacKinnon, our Scottie pup. Milk Bone, anyone? Fellers, Imagine getting seats for the Super Bowl just the third row from the field on the 50 yard line on the home team side. Well, that's where I was sitting at the memorial today for the wreath-laying ceremony. We hooked up with the National Commandant and Executive Director of the Marine Corps League and were escorted to those choice seats. Nobody sitting in front of me was any lower rank than a Lt. General and I had a Brigadier sitting behind me. It was a grand show with the President's Own band, Drum and Bugle Corps, and the battalion from 8th and Eye. There was a tremendous turn-out of old Marines there, too. I'll post some pics as soon as I figure out how to squeeze them out of the camera. Mikey, Thane of Duninsane |
