Hi people i hope msn is nice today, well last friday i had a hundred petunia seedlings growing in my greenhouse plus nearly 300 tomatoe plants anyway i went into my greenhouse sat morning and only 4 of my petuias were left by the trail left a snail had eaten them all, i searched the greenhouse to find one solitry snail quite fat and fast asleep, i hit the little blighter with salt, so i will have to put more seed in i e mailed my suppler that morning and luckly that have a few packets left as they are very popular plant TEDDY
Know how you feel Teddy, have had lots of problems with slugs and snails and I had ALL my sunflowers eaten only 16 I know but they were grown in pots and as soon as I put them out they had a ruddy party, as well as them they took care of loads of seedlings, so disheartening ! Wish you luck X
awww poor Teddy...:( I guess I never realized what kind of damage a snail could do?? Of course I've never started much of anything just by seeds...I leave that hard work up to someone else..lol
Well i put another hundred petunia seeds in today and i found another snail he/she is now in snail heaven, they is several things you can do when you plants are out side to give the snails a hard time 1/ put a saucer of beer near your plants they go mad on beer then to fat to move 2/ spread crushed egg shells around the base of the plant the egg shells dig into the frail body 3/ spread dolermite dust around your plant, some say use snail bait thats ok till it gets wet, but i had a good idea for future weedlings , in our local coffee shop he uses a metal cage in the shape of a dome on his muffins to keep insects off i thought if it keeps flys off it would keep snails off only the very smallest would get through so i will be looking to buy 2-3 from my hardware store A S A P
Tried egg shells Teddy, lol English snails are tough ! (maybe it's the clogs ?) it did not work !! I heard that coffee grouns out of the coffee maker are good or maybe a strong cup of coffee poured around the plants (no milk or sugar)
