Fibromyalgia

Homeopathy can often provide relief from the unpredictable, sometimes debilitating, aches and pains of fibromyalgia. Nutritional supplements, dietary monitoring, special types of exercise, and other natural approaches are also helpful and may be used along with remedies.  http://www.thedacare.org/healthinfo/Homeo/

For dosage information, please read the information at the end of this section. See also "Using Homeopathy With Professional Guidance" in What Is Homeopathy? http://www.thedacare.org/healthinfo/Homeo/What_Is_Homeopathy_hm.htm

Arnica:

This remedy is indicated when any body area feels bruised and sore, after exertion, overuse of muscles, or injury. Sometimes Arnica is enough to soothe a chronic condition; often, other remedies follow Arnica.

Bryonia:

A person who needs this remedy tries to stay as still as possible, since even the slightest motion aggravates the pain. People who need this remedy often feel extremely irritable and grumpy, not wanting to be touched or interfered with. Warmth often makes things worse and cool applications may be soothing. Pressure on the painful parts (or lying on them) often helps, because it minimizes movement.

Calcarea carbonica:

Muscle soreness and weakness that are worse from exertion, and worse from getting cold and damp, may be relieved by this remedy. The person often is chilly with clammy hands and feet, easily fatigued, and has a tendency to feel overwhelmed and anxious. Cravings for sweets and eggs often confirm the choice of this remedy.

Causticum:

Soreness, weakness, and stiffness in the muscles-worse from being cold and worse from overuse-suggests a need for this remedy. The forearms often feel stiff, unsteady, and very weak. The muscles of the legs can feel contracted and sore, and the person may have restless legs at night. Problems tend to be worse when the weather is dry, and better in rainy weather (although getting wet aggravates the pain and stiffness). Warm applications and warming up in bed often relieve discomfort.

Cimicifuga (also called Actae racemosa):

People who need this remedy are often energetic and talkative, becoming depressed or fearful when physical problems trouble them. Soreness and stiffness of muscles may be accompanied by shooting pains and are usually aggravated by getting cold. The neck and spinal muscles can be very tight, and the person may have headaches and other problems during menstrual periods.

Kalmia latifolia:

Severe pain in the muscles, extending from higher areas to lower ones, often responds to this remedy. Shooting pains may occur, along with stiffness, neuralgia, and numbness or a cold sensation. Pains can come on suddenly, and often shift around, being worse from motion and worse at night.

Ranunculus bulbosus:

This remedy is often helpful with fibrositis and muscle stiffness, especially when the neck and back muscles are involved. Stabbing pains and soreness may be felt near the spine and shoulder-blades, especially on the left. Problems may be aggravated by cold damp weather, walking, and alcoholic beverages.

Rhus toxicodendron:

If a person feels very restless, with stiffness and soreness that find relief in warmth and motion, this remedy should be considered. Problems are aggravated in cold, damp weather. Stiffness and pain are worse on waking in the morning, and after periods of rest.

Ruta graveolens:

Tremendous stiffness of the muscles, with lameness, pain, and weakness (especially after overuse) may be soothed with this remedy. The legs and hips are sore and weak, and the person may find it difficult to stand after sitting in a chair. Muscles in the back and neck feel bruised, the tendons may be sore, and the wrists and hands feel painful and contracted.

Homeopathy Dosage Directions

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Homeopathy for injuries

"Conventional medicine’s forté is the stabilization of acute trauma. Homeopathy adds to this level of treatment with remedies for injuries."
"Bellis perennis is a useful remedy to store in your tool kit if you’re a weekend carpenter and can’t swing a hammer straight."

Homeopathy is an ideal medicine for injuries. In general practice and walk-in clinics, a physician sees children and adults with every type of injury, from bumps and bruises to lacerations and fractures. Conventional medicine’s forté is the stabilization of acute trauma, offering the needed basics: ice, compression, elevation, and analgesics for sprains. X-rays and casting of fractures. Suturing and surgery if necessary. Homeopathy adds to this level of treatment with the remedies Arnica, Bellis perennis, Hypericum, Ledum, Cantharis, Calendula, and Symphytum.

Arnica montana,

the Alpine daisy, is the best medicine for bruising trauma, such as a kick in the shin while playing soccer. A head injury would benefit from, especially if a hematoma (bruised lump) forms on the scalp. Give Arnica in 200C potency every 15 minutes (under the tongue) for concussions or brain injuries. will also ease a back that is sore from shovelling snow this Canadian winter. All rock climbers should carry it in their daypacks & for tumbling off mountains or twisting ankles.

Bellis perennis,

the Carpenters?daisy, does excellent work for injuries to pelvic organs. One of my patients fell astride a log and couldn’t urinate due to prostatic swelling. Bellis perennis did what the urologist couldn’t do. By the next day, he was peeing almost normally. Bellis is "a princely remedy for old labourers, especially gardeners," wrote Dr. Compton-Burnett, a 19th-century homeopathic MD (and perhaps gardener), so we keep it on hand in Victoria. It’s a useful remedy to store in your tool kit if you’re a weekend carpenter (like me) and can’t swing a hammer straight.

Hypericum,

homeopathic St. John’s wort, is not used for depression as is the herb, but rather for nerve injuries. Cuts to the fingertip or lip, areas that are rich in nerve supply, or injuries to the spinal cord will benefit from &give one dose of 200C potency hourly. Shooting pains travelling down the limb are characteristic of nerve injuries suitable for treatment with Hypericum.

Ledum,

homeopathic Marsh tea, is ideal for puncture wounds. Characteristically, the wound feels cold and pains tend to shoot up the injured limb. Stepping on a nail would call for this remedy. Give 30C or 200C potency every one to four hours as needed.

Cantharis,

made from Spanish fly, will treat burns (and also bladder infections if burning irritation is the prominent symptom). In conventional medicine, doctors use in a crude form (Cantharin) to burn off warts. Since homeopathy uses the principle of "Like cures like" (in other words, what can burn in large doses can cure burns in small doses), a small homeopathic dose of Cantharis will treat scalds and sunburn injuries. Take 200C every 15 minutes until pain free, then every one to four hours.

Calendula tincture,

made from the garden Marigold, is an excellent solution to apply locally to a wound. It cleans the wound and promotes healing. Homeopathic Calendula pills, when dissolved under the tongue, act systemically and treat really ugly wounds that are badly infected. Try 30C every four hours.

Symphytum,

the potentized Comfrey plant, is known as "Knitbone." It has a remarkable ability to heal fractured bones, even those that fail to unite despite being well positioned in a cast. But Symphytum should only be used after the fracture has been properly aligned, otherwise the bone will "knit" crookedly. Take one dose of 200C nightly for seven days. Symphytum is also known as "Arnica of the Eye" and is preferred over Arnica for injuries causing black eyes.

With these homeopathic remedies in hand, you can improve the outcome of almost every type of injury.

A Homeopathic Perspective on Sore Throats
©1992, Dana Ullman, M.P.H.
(Excepted from Homeopathic Medicine for Children and Infants, Tarcher/Putnam)

REMEDIES LISTED IN CAPITOL LETTERS REPRESENT MORE FREQUENTLY INDICATED REMEDIES

Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating the acute symptoms of a sore throat, though professional constitutional care is usually necessary to cure chronically recurring sore throats. Children with much pain from a sore throat or those who have difficulty opening their mouth or swallowing should receive a culture to determine if they have strep.

ACONITUM: Consider this medicine during the initial onset of the sore throat. The symptoms come on suddenly, often after exposure to a cold air. There may be some burning in the throat and a red, dry, swollen throat.

APIS: These children have a red, inflamed throat with swollen tonsils, which is aggravated by warm drinks or food and relieved by cold drinks or sucking on an ice cube. This remedy should be considered when the throat hurts even when the child isn't swallowing. The throat not only looks red, it looks shiny. There is dryness in the throat with a burning, stinging pain. They have constrictive feeling in the throat. The inner and outer throat is swollen, and the uvula which hangs from the upper throat is also swollen. These children may have a sensation of a fishbone caught in the throat and may have difficulty swallowing. They may experience hoarseness in the mornings and cannot stand to have anything around their neck.

Arsenicum: When children have a burning pain in the throat that is relieved by warm food or drinks and aggravated by cold food or drinks, this medicine should be considered. The child's condition may begin with a nasal discharge and then go into the throat. The pains are usually worse on the right side. There may also be dryness of the mouth with a great thirst for frequent sips of water.

BELLADONNA: This medicine is the most common remedy for acute tonsilitis. It is also commonly given at the early stages of other types of sore throat. The tonsils are noticeably red, usually scarlet red. There are burning pains and a constant desire to swallow, despite the fact that it hurts to do so. There is a constricting feeling in the throat, which causes difficulty even swallowing water. They have a tendency to desire lemons or lemonade. There is a tickling in the larnyx. If these children have a fever, it will usually be a high one. Characteristically, their head is hot, though their extremities are cold.

Ferrum phos: This remedy is common for acute, non-violent tonsillitis. The inflammation does not begin suddenly, and the pain is not severe. The throat is red and swollen, especially on waking. They have pain on swallowing, usually a burning pain, which is better from cold applications. They may also have hoarseness. This remedy should be considered for sore throats in children who sing a lot.

Hepar sulph: When children experience a sensation as though there was a stick in the throat, or when a sore throat starts after the child is exposed to cold, this medicine should be considered. The tonsils are enlarged, and they have throbbing pains. There is usually a radiating pain to the ears on swallowing. Hot drinks provide some relief. These children are hypersensitive to touch and cold and are highly irritable.

Ignatia: The distinguishing symptom of children who need this medicine is sore throat pain that is relieved by swallowing foods and is aggravated by empty swallowing (Lachesis children also have this symptom). These children may experience throat pain even when they don't swallow. They tend to have a lump in the throat, sometimes related to the suppression of some strong emotion. They sometimes have hoarseness or a complete loss of their voice. An emotional state is also evidenced by their tendency to take deep breaths or to sigh frequently.

LACHESIS: When children have a sore throat that is worse on the left side, this medicine is often indicated. The left gland in the throat is more swollen, and inside the throat the left side is more red, sometimes purplish. They tend to experience a constant tickle or a feeling of a fishbone caught in the throat. Their pains are worsened by empty swallowing (just swallowing saliva) or drinking warm or hot liquids, and the pains are eased when swallowing foods. Their throat particularly hurts when they try to hawk up mucus. The throat is hypersensitive to touch, which explains why these children do not like wearing clothes with a tight collar.

Lycopodium: This medicine should be considered when the child has a sore throat that is worse on the right side or one that has started on the right and moved to the left. Although the child may not notice the difference, the parent who looks in the throat will be able to see more inflammation on either side. The throat is aggravated by swallowing cold liquids and relieved by warm ones. The child may experience a choking sensation, as though a ball was stuck in their throat.

MERCURIUS: These children have colds that settle in their throat. They have a constant desire to swallow and much pain when they do so. In extreme cases they have a choking sensation on swallowing. There is much redness and swelling in the throat along with a raw burning pain. Their throat is dry despite much salivation in their mouth. They may have so much salivation that they need to swallow frequently, and they may wet their pillow with saliva. They have swollen tonsils and lymph glands, and their throat pain extends to the ear. Their throat can be ulcerated and tends to be worse on the right side. Another characteristic symptom is their noticeably bad breath. When a child has these symptoms along with a left-sided sore throat, give Mercurius iodatus ruber; when a child has a right-sided sore throat, give Mercurius iodatus flavus.

Phytolacca: There are two types of pains that are experienced when swallowing which are characteristic of the need for this medicine: shooting pain from the throat into the ears, and pain at the root of the tongue that causes pain when the child sticks out their tongue. They have a feeling of rawness and roughness in the throat, which is usually worse on the right side and while drinking hot fluids. The children feel a swollen, constricted feeling in the throat. The tonsils tend to be swollen and may have been swollen for a long time. The glands in their neck are also swollen.

RHUS TOX: These children have throat pain on initial swallowing but experience relief the more often they swallow.
Sulphur: This medicine is helpful for children who experience burning pains in the throat that are aggravated by warm food or drinks and relieved by cold drinks. They have swollen tonsils and offensive breath.
Wyethia: When children have a tickling sensation on the roof of the mouth or in the throat that stimulates coughing, this medicine should be considered. Another important indication for this medicine is a sore throat caused by an allergy. It is also commonly effective in treating sore throats in children who sing a lot or who irritate their throat from overuse. They usually have a dry, hot, and swollen throat with a constant desire to swallow saliva, despite having difficulty swallowing.

Daily Dose, November 01, 2005

The pilloried Prince's noble crusade marches on!

Time for an update in the ongoing saga of what I call the Modern-day Battle of Britain: The struggle between the conventional medicine doled out meagerly and after horrendous waiting and paperwork by the tired, socialized British medical system, and alternative ("complementary" in UK lingo) medicine techniques advocated by the high-profile, yet largely powerless Royal family.

To recap: In the recent past, I've written about the Queen Mum's unprecedented selection of an alternative medicine advocate as her personal physician (Daily Dose, 5/11/204), likely due in no small part to the influence of Prince Charles, himself among the world's most outspoken advocates of naturopathic remedies.

I've also kept you informed about the Prince's own machinations within the UK's ponderous system to try and bring complementary therapies to the masses (Daily Dose, 8/9/2005). These efforts included the formation of the Foundation for Integrated Health, a new adjunct to the UK's department of health (called the DHS). The sole purpose of this new entity is to research and promote complementary medical techniques so that Britons will be able to benefit from ALL of medicine, not just the pill and scalpel variety.

Yet despite recent polls from the BBCNews and others showing...

  • 71% ... wanted more information on complementary therapies like herbal medicine, chiropractic, and hypnotherapy

  • 38% feared their conventional doctors' reactions to these types of treatments

  • 85% of British GPs claim not to know enough about complementary therapies to advise their patients

...elements of the notoriously vicious British press last year attacked the Prince's alt-medicine stance, gleefully re-publishing a letter from one of the UK's leading cancer specialists that ridiculed Charles to the entire medical community!

But despite the media's continuing portrayal of him as a spoiled, passion-less, air-brained gadabout, "Bonnie Prince Charlie" is hanging tough - and even advancing his agenda in spite of opposition from the tabloids and the European Union......

Despite his repeated thrashing in the media, the maligned monarch commissioned the former chief economics advisor to London's prestigious Barclay's Bank to compile a report of the estimated savings that integrating complementary medicine into the mainstream medical system in Britain would yield.

Among the report's findings:

  • Up to 3.5 billion pounds (6.3 billion dollars) could be realized by offering JUST ONE alternative medicine treatment - chiropractic care - as a standard option for back pain under NHS guidelines

  • As much as 480 million pounds (850 million dollars) could be shaved from prescription costs if just 10 PERCENT of GPs would begin offering homeopathic alternatives to drugs. As one example of this...

  • A full 38 million pounds (around 75 million dollars) could be saved by switching appropriate depression patients from antidepressants to Saint John's Wort

According to the AFP (Britain's answer to the AP) article, the report is scheduled to be delivered to the DHS this month. But only time will tell whether the medical mainstream in the UK (not to mention the media) will be swayed by the dollars of the matter...

They certainly aren't persuaded by sense. ....     William Campbell Douglass II, MD
