I went in there today to see what's what and I have some questions:

  1. When you go into General or Books, it brings up Loft Shoutbox and has the same items in each category - what do you do with this here, what's that about?
  2. Do you go into View Active Topics for the current conversations, as we do here in General?
  3. How do you create a new discussion?

Help!

Are you having an issue with not being able to login still?

(and it doesn't hurt to have both IE and FF)

Yup, I tried it again. I put in my userid and password and it says "you are now logged in; return to the ........(forget what it says here). And I return to where I was but it keeps bringing up the screen to log in.

Since you still haven't said which you're using, I'm going to assume IE7.

Go Start -> Control Panel.

Make sure you click on "Switch to Classic View" in the upper left if it's there. (If it says "Switch to Category View", just leave it alone. You're where you need to be.

Double-click on Internet Options.

Click on the Advanced tab.

Click on the Reset.... button near the bottom right.

You should get an "Are you sure...." window. Click on Reset again.

This should reset all your cache, cookie, forms, etc. settings. You should not have a problem logging into the site after you do this. Post back here if you do. I'm going to be gone for a few hours, but will look back here when I return. Should be around 8 or 9 EST.

Crikey, sorry to be such a bug! I was in IE7 and did as you asked. However it didn't ask me to switch to anything so I just chose Internet Options. At the Advanced tab, there was no Reset button to push, so I went back and deleted cookies and files.
I still can't get in. So I thought okay, maybe I'll just register. I put in all the information then it asked me to type in the code provided below. There was none. I'm at my wits end.

P.S., I can get into the new Loft when I'm in the old Internet Explorer.  Another question about it:  It seems you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to go to the Next Topic; it's not at the top like on the current board.

Something isn't right. You shouldn't have an 'old' Internet Explorer if you correctly installed IE7. The Reset button that I was referring to will only show up for IE7.

Did you reboot after the installation?

And there is no re-registration. Each user can only register once. So it isn't that. Especially considering you're getting in with IE6. You've got me confused.

The IE7 appears to be installed okay.  I was in there and I swear, there was no Reset button.  And I did reboot after everything was installed.  I wish you could take over my machine and see just what's going on.    But I do appreciate all the time you've taken to help me.

Do you have MSN messenger? I may be able to do remote assistance to get onto your machine and see what's going on.

The internet options you were in were still for IE6 if that button wasn't there.

You're only meant to have a single version of IE on your machine (as far as I know)....so I don't know how you have both 6 & 7 running simultaneously.

I never signed up for MSN Messenger.  And just now, I tried to sign up (or run the program for it) and it comes back with "this is an unverified publisher and is a risk to your computer".   Why me, Lord???

As long as you downloaded messenger from Microsoft, don't worry about that message and go ahead and install it. I can't promise we'll be able to get this to work (mostly due to routers and firewalls and such), but it's worth a shot.

The weekend after Christmas I moved everything to the domain www.thenewloft.com. Most likely your browser still has cookies for the old name. For security purposes, the board uses a combination of cookies and session data to manage logins.

Your ID is still fine and it actually shows you as being there on 1/13/2009 at 1:13AM.

Most likely you're logging in successfully and being thrown right back to the login screen.

Try this:

1) Go to the login screen (www.thenewloft.com). At the bottom right you should see a link to "Delete all board cookies." Click on that and confirm. Try logging in again and see if that worked.

If it did not work, then try this:

2) Clear your cookies and cache in your browser. The method for doing this differs between browsers and browser versions. If you can't figure out how to do it, post back with your browser information (type and version, IE6, IE7, Firefox3) and I'll give you instructions.

Nifty feature at the new place; when a person applies, their location can be identified before they are admitted, allowing us to check very carefully to see that it truly is a private board.

Kudos for that!
