High surf warnings from Ventura to San Diego

ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN DIEGO ?The National Weather Service posted high surf advisories from Ventura and Los Angeles counties south to Orange and San Diego counties through Wednesday night. Surf was building to 5-to-7 feet with occasional sets from 8-to-10 feet, with strong rip current conditions, the NWS said.

“When in doubt, just stay out,?the NWS warned potential swimmers. “When visiting the shoreline never turn your back on the ocean.?/P>

Crowds gathered on the sand Tuesday in Newport beach to watch bodyboarding action as high surf rolled in at the famous “Wedge.?

Surf was up on all of Newport Beach's south-facing beaches although it was not extraordinarily high, said Lifeguard Battalion Chief Jim Turner.

“We're seeing about 5-to-7 feet on south-facing beaches and our prime south-facing spots are probably doing 10 to 12 feet,?he said.
