Suffering from a bad dose of new year blues recently I dusted off that trusty old classic Championship Manager 97/98 and - in need of a bit of trophy-therapy - I started up a game with a Rangers side who are always a shoo-in on that version of the game! I have just won the 97/98 SPL with 6 games to spare. Walter didn't manage that of course, perhaps I am the answer to the current discontent at Ibrox discussed elsewhere . I have wiped the floor with everyone over 30 gams thus far, including a 3-0 win at Parkhead. Conversely, my solitary defeat was in Glasgow's east end; leading 3-0, my team contrived to collapse to a 4-3 loss as Jorge Cadette single-handedly won the game. There have been other lowlights: a reserve team crashed 4-0 at Stranraer in the Coca-Cola Cup, with some clown called Darren Fitzgerald (subsequently bombed out under my unforgiving regime ) scoring an own goal. The Champions League group stages were reached with a two-legged win over Feyenoord to land me in a tough group with Man Utd and Bayern Munich but despite beating Galatasaray comfortably in the first group game I then went and suffered 5 straight group defeats; some very unluckily others less so. Bizarrely, the Rangers board - currently not flavour of the month in reality too, it seems - were rumoured to be considering my future in February after I allowed some non-entity called Brian McGinty's contract to be paid up! I have also off-loadedStephen Wright and Peter Van Vossen whilst bringing in Stephen Glass, Darren Huckerby and Lee Bowyer. Huckerby has been a real success, joint top scorer with super Ally, and for my own amusement I have recently signed former Dundee United coke-head and Reading-under-Burns flop Andy MacLaren who, as a versatile (and half decent, on this game at least) winger will provide deccent back up to Glass and the ubiquitous Laudrup. Tomorrow I will play my Scottish Cup semi final against Celtic missing Laudrup and Gazza through injury . Depending how bored I get with the game (initial excitement at starting a new 'career' does tend to fade very quickly) I will of course keep you updated on my quest for a11-in-a-row and Champions League double here in virtual Ibrox . |

You're doomed in that semi without Gazza and Laudrup ! I nearly bought Football Manager 2009 during the holidays there but changed my mind at the last minute. But I have now managed to break par at St Andrews on the Wii with Tiger Woods 2009, admittedly on the easy settings. My round of 66 a couple of nights ago including 7 consecutive birdies, and then a triple bogey at the Road Hole ! |
