I've noticed a strange thing over the last couple of years. When Celtic Park is sparsely attended, as it was clearly on Saturday from the television pictures showing thousands of empty seats, how come the official attendance is always close to capacity ?

The official attendance on Saturday v ICT was 55,117.

If that's the number of people inside the ground last Saturday then I'm the Queen of Sheba.

Why do they do this ? Do they count every season ticket holder as having attended, whether they were there or not ? Or is it purely just to create an image of having the largest support in the country ?

As you'll see there's alot more proven class in the M O'N squad and they very rarely lied back in Europe

Interesting and refreshing to read your comments above, Alltims, but what's it got to do with Celtic giving out false attendance figures ?

That's quite a change in policy regarding attendances. Years ago, in the"biscuit tin" days, attendances were regularly given out as much lower than they actually were. I worked with a lot of Celtic fans and they used laugh at some of the figures given out by the club.

I think people had alot more confidence behind M O'N and his squad although M O'N has arguably a worse record in Europe, he did better against European sides and won against alot of SPL sides win huge margins and i think that's why there's less people going to games

Ah, I see. I'm not convinced that's the case, because Strachan's team is ultimately more attractive to watch than O'Neill's one-dimensional 'long-ball and dive for free kicks around the box' tactics.

Although O'Neill did take Celtic to the UEFA Cup Final and the quarter-finals the following season, so he wasn't exactly a failure in Europe.

that's why i said arguably,i never thought he failed as he got 9 points in the groups stages in his first European season, which got WGS through in two seasons and he also brought a very good Valencia team to the wire with Penalties, also in the season obtained 103 points. Although WGS might have the tactics, M O'N's squad were solid in pretty much every area of the pitch and scored alot more goals

But did they not play a lot more games as well ? I may be wrong in this, but from memory the 103 points was accrued in one of the seasons when the league had 44 games.

I stand corrected. But I still don't think Celtic's crowds were better in the O'Neill era because of the type of football they played, just ask sutton.

Burnley used to print in their matchday programme 'paid' and 'actual' attendance, ie. tickets sold + season ticket holders as against those who clicked through the turnstile on the day.  Maybe Celtic count and publish this 'paid' attendance; do their season ticket holders get european games included as an added benefit?

No they don't. They sell the Champions League games in a 3-game package. Most probably there were 58,104 tickets sold for last night's game, however the actuall attendance was a good 8,000 or so less than that.

I thought in this day and age the Health and Safety regulations ensured that accurate attendances at matches are readily available to the police and ambulance authorities in case of any incidents.
