We were having a laugh in the office a few weeks ago when we found out that the MD of a company called MigiByte was coming in to visit us to talk about our new website, and his name was Paul McStay.

You can imagine my shock when I answered the door to, yes, the Paul McStay. That's what he's doing nowadays !

It made me think about other former players of his generation, and how many of the current generation will have to do something like that to earn a living after playing. I honestly don't see Barry Ferguson (the modern-day equivalent to McStay) needing to do something like that when he retires.

We had a return visit this week, and this time his associate director came along - his brother Raymond, who of course was also a former Celtic player.

I've also regularly met Alex McDonald (European Cup Winners' Cup medal in his pocket) while he was in at Arco buying hi-vis vests for Tyco Valves, where he now works. And Frank McGarvey was seen driving away from the same place in a ramshackle van with baldy tyres !

Has anyone else stumbled across a former high profile player now earning his crust in "normal world" ?

Yes!  In my old job several years back, I stepped out of the lift heading out of the office one lunchtime and a rather tubby, scruffily dressed chap came past me pushing a two-wheeled trolley loaded up with parcels and into the lift I had since vacated.  We exchanged a cursory glance and it was only after the lift doors shut and transported the fella upstairs I realiased it was Neil Webb no less; 26 England caps, the 1000th player ever to win an England cap, won European and domestic trophies and most importantly is a Reading boy who started his career with his home town side

The former Rangers player Ian McColl, who sadly passed away recently, set up his own coal delivery business after he finished playing. I had the pleasure of meeting him as he delivered coal to our tenement building in the early sixties.

I think his last game for Rangers was in the Scottish cup final of 1960 when we beat Kilmarnock 2-0. And of course he went on to become manager of the Scottish international team.

There is, of course, a long list of former players who now run pubs. I remember having Andy Goram serving TGO and I in the Quarry Bar in Rutherglen on Helicopter Sunday.

Funny you should mention George McClusky as he used to train my football team on a wednesday night as his son BJ was in the team,He was total crap and only got a game because of his dad! Had Gerry Crainey drop me off in a taxi once.

Eddie Hunter was a frequent visitor to my mum's work as well - he was a close friend of the owners.

Jimmy Johnson did PR for J Wilson & Co.

Eddie Hunter was hardly a high earner in his football career though. He was manager of Queen's Park, it's debatable whether he was paid at all or not. He had another job throughout his time as manager of Queen's Park.
