I am in my sixth week of not smoking and i am still experiencing "throat clearing", unlike my old smokers cough nothing comes up when i cough or clear my throat, also i still have a throat wheeze and i wonder do i need to get these checked out by my doctor or are they still symptoms of recovery?

I also got this following question by email this morning:

My brother in law as had pneumonia which was diagnosed four weeks ago, since then he has not smoked, he has been a smoker for more then 40 years. He now has a very bad cough and the doctor has told him this is due to stopping smoking and there is nothing you do until your body gets used to life without nicotine. My sister is very worried now has the cough has not improved, he as also had tests for lung cancer which have come back negative. Does this sound normal for someone who is given up smoking.
Many thanks for your help

Regards,
Teresa

It is not uncommon for people to cough more after quitting. I am going to a few links below that explain why it is a pretty common reaction. At the same time though, coughs should not be ignored and symptoms should not be indefinitely written off to simply not smoking. I will attach a few links addressing this issue too.
